So I spent some time scratching my head, wondering why my phoenixs never tracked anything on those missions where we were given one of them. I would fire it in TWS at 25-30 miles.

Then I realized, it's the ACM cover of course. With the cover up, the missile is pitbull off the rail, and too far away at 25-30 miles to acquire a target.

So my question: Why do ACM cover up on the FENCE in (per Jester's checklist), when you know you'll likely be starting the engagement BVR? I can understand flicking it up then down again, as it's an expedient way to set gun rate high, SW Cool and Missile prep. But to leave it up seems counter productive.

Is there a reason I'm missing, or is it contextual based on the type of engagement expected, where maybe that one checklist item should be left out in certain missions?

The checklist says ‘as desired’ - and we had to pick one option for the voice overs, Bio said it would be up most of the time.

Cool, as good an answer as any, thanks!

Yeah, this ACM cover is very confusing with AIM-54, if you leave it up and try to launch in both TWS & STT not in WVR range, the missile won't track and it's just a waste 😞

With AIM-7 it works ok, cause WCS switches to NORM missile mode when you lock a target, and to BRST mode without a lock.

Sure, but this issue is not very well documented in F-14 manual, so I just suggest to add some comment to this checklist item,

like - ACM GUARD should be DOWN for BVR AIM-54 launches!

Cause for anybody not well familiar with this issue, flying to the training zone takes a lot of time, and after that you listen to fence-in checklist, flip ACM guard up,

and then launch AIM-54 and it doesn't track - feels very confusing and frustrating.
