Pilotasso Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 (edited) This type was aquired from the Dutch after their rather insane hardware re-sales out of their army (along 2 Karel doorman frigates and 5 P-3 orions). A total 37 (+1 turretless for training) were aquired for less than 60 million Euro, and they officialy enter service today. Some pics: http://ww1.rtp.pt/multimedia/?tvprog=1098&idpod=18454&formato=flv Actualy they are Leo A4's with A6's turret and combat systems, but who will complain about this much bang for the buck?! :D Enjoy. Force_Feedback Posted October 22, 2008 Posted October 22, 2008 (edited) Oh, our government, all for 'christian values' (bulls%$^, specatum tauri), while cutting on the military and selling the hardware to finance 'other' things (other may mean: own pockets, pockets of families, pockets of affiliated contractors). Oh well, at least our navy ships have the Standard SM-3 to shoot down stray, errm, wait, who's going to launch ballistic missiles at the Netherlands? Meanwhile, our F-16s get sold to Chilie, our APCs (or something like that) too, and even ther I'm seeing ads for the F-35 JSF on screens in BARS, I want to drink damn it, not see ads for how great the JSF is. High tech is great, but financing it by selling off other, not yet obsolete hardware is ridiculous. Edited October 22, 2008 by Force_Feedback Rant extended :P Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Pilotasso Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 Todays conflicts are rarely fought at home. Enemy incursion of armored battalions in my country or yours is extremely remote. Thats why there will be only 37 of them while Ukraine, Germany and poland have a force much more oriented for homeland defense facing russia and thus field much more units. The bulk of the new aquisitions is not the Leopards but rather the Pandur II modular combat vehicles wich will total 260 units of varios versions, from anti-tank missile launchers to engeneering and repair units, mobile artilery, APC's, anfibian landing, recon, Battlefield radar assesment, mobile command and com units, and an option for 30 extra units of a heavy anti-tank 105mm turreted version (with advanced aiming and sensors), all of wich will be manufactured localy. They will cover todays threats. The leopards are just an insurance we are ready to support any other allied groups from high intensity combat. .
