Gunfreak Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 A simple question I'd think. But google and wiki refuses to tell me. Wiki has an epic poem sized article about the plane with detailed info on thr planes history for all countries that used it. Except Russia, no info on it's history in the Russian air force nor when it stopped using it. i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 3090, 64Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.
rossmum Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 I don't know exactly when it was phased out fully (it was mainly in fighter-bomber service by the mid 80s), but there is a definite end date: all single-engined combat types were retired by decree by 1998. You might encounter some in less 'frontline' units or the far east into the late 80s, but I wouldn't expect them to persist into the 90s, so it's entirely possible Russia never operated them and they all went to other former SSRs before or at the collapse of the USSR. 2
MiG21bisFishbedL Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Also, define end of service. I wouldn't be surprised if the RuAF had a few MiG-21s packed away for chaseplanes or other such uses. Reformers hate him! This one weird trick found by a bush pilot will make gunfighter obsessed old farts angry at your multi-role carrier deck line up!
Lurker Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 (edited) I think that the Mig21 was phased out even before the collapse of the Soviet Union. the USSR was the premier buyer of it's own weapon systems after all, and the Mig23 as well as the later Mig29 were available long before that happened. some1 Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 Some of the aircraft replaced by newer models in frontline units were transferred to pilot schools and training so it's hard to pinpoint the exact date. After collapse of Soviet Union and massive reduction in defence spending and flying, they probably were the first ones to went into state of disrepair. Here for example they were in use till 1992 http://www.ww2.dk/new/air force/regiment/uap/96uap.htm Hardware: VPForce Rhino, FSSB R3 Ultra, Virpil WarBRD, Hotas Warthog, Winwing F15EX, Slaw Rudder, GVL224 Trio Throttle, Thrustmaster MFDs, Saitek Trim wheel, Trackir 5, Quest Pro
