I am really not sure. I died 5 times during mission number 4 because my wingman seemed to do nothing while I was going defensive. Looked to me like he was trying to stay in formation to me 😄

So next time I tried to order him to engage bandits, but that did not help much. Then during landing he crashed into me.

Coming from the Raven One Campaign where you are explicitly told not to give any commands, since it is heavily scripted, I am wondering what is expected of me in this campaign? Can I just forget about my wingmen and hope for the best or should I actively issue orders?

You can give orders to your wingman  no problem. Sometimes I could not give the order to engage the bandits until near enough. I think in some missions there seems to be a trigger which has to be reached first, before you can give the command to engage. Try the command "cover me" to your wingman, this normaly always worked for testing.

Yes, you need to give commands to your wingmen using the built in menu.

There is no trigger that prevents you from it, the only thing that can prevent you is not using channel 1, or not using the radio that is set to channel 1. Keep in mind that they have separate push to talk buttons.

Only in the mission 'Fleet Defender' your wingman is set to 'silent' but the commands still work, he just won't reply.
