Not sure where to post this one, so in Chit-Chat it went.

The title mostly explains the question. I mostly understand the general layout of the site, but I'm curious as to what auxiliary vehicles and buildings are used and how and where they should be placed. Also, what vehicles/buildings that we have now in DCS would be appropriate for use with the site?

A full list of battery components can be found here (not including buildings and structures). At the moment though only the K-1V (5N62V) FCR and 5P72V launchers are present - none of the other components are and so far only another search radar is planned (which should be the 5N84AE, though it really needs the PRV-17 and NRZ-14/Parol to go with it).

*Note that the proper designation is K-1V (not K-1M) for the S-200V/VE and the PRV-17's NATO reporting name is "Odd Group" not "Odd Pair".

As for buildings that we have now, you can approximate the crew stations, barracks and accommodation buildings, and probably the main storage building, maybe a few more.

Generally, sites are laid out with groups of 6 launchers, arranged in a hexagon/spade shape, with a K-3 launch control cabin and generator in the middle, associated guidance RA is located about 800m away, along the longitudinal axis of its launch battalion.

Adjacent will be a site containing a technical battalion (responsible for missile handling, including assembly, fuelling and testing), and (at least sometimes) a support area, which accommodates the crew.

Sites vary though from country to country (and even in the same country), though it should be said that you'll find more in common among S-200 sites belonging to the Warsaw Pact. Past that it's only really the configuration of launch battalions and the positions of the FCRs that are consistent, though there are exceptions.

Here's a link showing some examples of S-200 sites, both of the typical layouts as used by Warsaw Pact members.

Here is a link to SAM Site Overview.kmz, which lists several sites, and there's a fair few of them where you can see the positions of the launching battalions, technical battalion and logistics (if present, fairly sure technical and logistics are sometimes combined into one large area).

For a detailed look at specific site, the best resource I can give you is this (with a translated version here). It's a fantastic, in depth description of a former Czechoslovak S-200VE site, belonging to the Prague 71st Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, located near Dobříš in Czechia, with plenty of photographs (both inside and outside).

It's one of the best documented and photographed S-200 sites I've found so far. If you follow this link, you'll see there are several other sites (including S-75/SA-2, S-125/SA-3 and another S-200VE site), though some are better documented and photographed than others.

Section C (combat):

This section gives us the overview of all the combat elements of the site, including the 3 firing battalions and their respective guidance posts, the acquisition radars (5N84AE + PRV-17), the technical battalion, as well as the battery command post and an IADS microwave link (5Ya63).

At the bottom of the image you can see the A section (which is colocated with the B section) - both form the support area.

klondajk_c.jpg

  • K-1B: K-1V - 5N62V [Square Pair] FCR (these were mounted on large elevated platforms, known as "bridges")
  • K-3: K-3V LCC (Launch Control Centre)
  • K-9: K-9M Battery Command Centre
  • VS: K-2V FCC (Fire Control Centre) + K-22M power/converter cabin
  • P-14: 5N84AE [Tall King C] - long-range, 2D, A band, acquisition radar
  • PRV-17: PRV-17 [Odd Group] - long-range, E band, height-finding radar
  • EC: Electrical generator.
  • 5Ja63: 5Ya63 "Cycloid" microwave link for the Senezh-ME IADS network, I believe there is also a wired connection, with the 5Ya63 serving as a backup.
  • Autopark bojové techniky: combat equipment park (transloaders etc)
  • technický oddíl: technical battalion/section
  • Hlavní skladovací objekt: main storage bunker
  • 17/18/19. plro: anti-aircraft missile launch battalions
  • stanoviště přečerpávání paliva: missile refuelling station
  • strážní úseku "C": watchtower and guardhouse for section C
  • rozvadišti: fairly sure this is referring to a set of instruction boards near the guardhouse and watchtower.

It should be said that the K-1V, K-2V, K-3V and K-9M are all based on the OdAZ-828 semi-trailer, the 5E97, K-21M and K-22M are all towed as well (at this site, there are also additional, fixed back-up electrical systems, as well as being connected to country's electrical grid).

At this site, the K-2V, K-3V, K-9M, K-21M, K-22M and 5E97, are all located in hardened bunkers/structures:

  • K-2V + K-22M - located in a hardened bunker adjacent to the 5N62/K-1V "bridge", this also has a backup power supply.
  • K-3V + 5E97 - located in a hardened bunker in the centre of the launchers. At the 18th launch battalion, there's an additional bunker with an additional back-up power supply that can supply all 3 launch battalions. (Looks like the Czechoslovakians were really big on the power supplies, and having backups for backups for backups)
  • K-9M + K-7 cabin + 3x 5E97 + K-21M - located in its own bunker, immediately to the south of the guidance area. Presumably these supply power to the 5N72Vs as well as the K-2V and K-3V.

Launch Battalion Detail:

Here's a detailed look at the 17th Anti-Aircraft Missile Launching Battalion, you can see the general layout with the typical spade/hexagon shaped arrangement, with each launch position being a concrete launch pad, with the launcher placed inside a square opening (see this image). The launch positions are revetted with an L-shaped revetment on one side, and a straight revetment on the other, forming a roughly triangular shape.

At each launch position, there's typically a small building (or bunker) storing 2 reloads on 5Yu24ME rail transloaders. The reloads are typically stored in 2 separate rooms, each with their own doors, and from each door to the launcher there a set of rails for the 5Yu24ME rail transloader (the 2 sets of recessed rails can be seen in this image).

Curiously, at this site the various buildings for the reloads are different; each battalion has 2 that are reinforced bunkers, 2 that are brick and 2 lighter structures out of corrugated iron. (EDIT: the site mentions this was done to save cost, and that in peacetime, only the reinforced bunkers would store reloads). Though the general layout and the amount of reloads stored is the same (the buildings store 2 missile reloads each, each behind a seperate doors with the hardened bunker and corrugated iron building having a seperate room for each reload).

klondajk_plro.jpg

  1. Bunker for K-3V LCC (launch control centre) and 5E93 diesel generator (which I think powers the entire launch battalion)
  2. Hardened storage bunker for 5V28VE reloads (I think there were 2 reloads per launcher)
  3. Launch pad (w. 'light'(?) storage bunker EDIT: this is made of corrugated iron)
  4. Launch pad with a brick storage facility
  5. Crew accommodation building (used when crews are on standby, and during war time, there's also one just north of the K-9M bunker).

Technical Battalion Detail:

As mentioned above, this section is responsible for missile handling; including fuelling, assembly and storage (both of complete missiles, and of components to assemble more), as well as for calibrating guidance systems and performing analysis on the propellants.

Also located here is a vehicle park for various vehicles used on the site.

Wow. That's a lot of information. Thanks! The IMINT and fortifikace websites have a lot of cool information, too.

I've been trying to kitbash a site with varying degrees of success (went from the evergreen Volkhov site to a proper barebones Vega one with random bunkers thrown around at some point), but it's slowly starting to look like the real thing. Looks a bit underwhelming without the forest between the various components and roads connecting them, though. Manually placing trees like we do other structures would make for a neat feature somewhere in the future.

Still have the Technical Batallion and the Logistics side to build. Will return sometime with screenshots, as I'm kind of far from my main PC right now.

Need to find a way to hide the reload trucks, though...

Looks pretty good!

IRL, there are actually 2 former S-200 sites present on the Caucasus map (though the mesh kinda makes it difficult).
