Does the magnetic variation knob actually do anything?

I didn't see any difference between leaving the knob at 0 and setting it to +6 at Caucus. Is it functional?

First, you never have to bother with it because it is automatically set when you spawn.

If you really want to set it, the way it's set up for mouse interaction is bugged. The dial is only selectable when the switch cover is closed.  I have never bothered to figure it out.
