Hey Guys,

i am a little bit disappointed. In the Mi8 using the 30mm is a nightmare - as soon as you have no ranging information at all they are quite useless. I am very happy to have the 30mm back in the Hind - but - while all other Weapons like most of the rockets and guns (external and internal) have a ranging information and a shoot que - i had to figure out that the Grenade laucher is again a nightmare due to no information where to aim.

Is it just not implemented or is there any workaround to get the 30mm into the target a bit more precisely?

Thanks in advance 😃

I don't think hind has an auto ranging ability for grenade launcher since it's meant only for infantry and light/transport vehicles such as humvees, uaz, ural ... it also has a very high dispersion, further you shot, more dispersion you get and that's the main reason you have to rely on manual sights which needs to be manualy adjusted before shooting. Or you just shoot first pair of grenades, see where they land and fix the nose accordingly.

Helicopters don't fly, they just subdue the air.

Hi,

look at Chuck's guide, page 325:

9. Set Sight Ranging Mode Selector MANUAL (Note no automatic computed ranging information is available for the grenade launchers)

and here

So, everything ist right.

Thank you - it’s too bad matt does not show how to use them precisely:/ chucks guide didn‘t work out for me 😕 neither in the gazelle nor in the hind 😞 the problem is - even with the tables from the documentation (In this case mi8) the shots are far of 😞 it’s a bit annoying because it would be a cool weapon

@CYPHER11I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think it is only a thing of a practice, so more you use it, more feeling do you get. It is really a crude weapon with heavy and large munition which has very steep parabola (so the grenades are falling down quite fast after being shot) but a devastating one when used correctly.

Once ED implements the morale system for ground troops, grenade launchers should be a morale destructors - once in the future. You know, when everything is just exploding around you, you are completely incapable of doing anything if you're in fear of your life. This may not be true for everyone but definitely for a majority.

For me personally, the grenade launcher is currently more of a just for fun weapon. With the 30mm, Rocketlauncher and the 7.62 & 12mm Gatlinguns I am better served and get better results. I also think that you have to practice more with it before you can use the grenade launcher effectively.

Chucks guide didn’t have manual aiming tables for the grenades? There are manual aiming tables available

Yeah for the mi8 but they don‘t work - 3 times with same parameters - I’ll set up trigger zones to send me a message when I am at 2000,1500,1000 and 500m from the target for practicing but the grenades go way of - for the Hind no tables available 😕

Collective settings, speed, ball and side slip all have a role here. Not just range. You only need range for cannon and rockets with asp 17 though. The sight handles the rest.

If you overshoot then reduce collective settings. Shots deviate towards the ball as well. It's very hands on experience. It took me a year to figure out mi8 gunnery with rockets and I still do mistakes. That's why ballistic computer on a mi24 is a godsend. Only need to guess range right. Ball, climb/collective, speed are all calculated.

Grenade launchers are realistically 500-1000m weapons. In the end they were replaced by rockets and guns with 1-2km range.

I tried to set a attack run with 30mm grenades using this table once.

In the end I had to adjust on the fly and even getting a lot of grenades in the target area the results weren't good.

Just for the fun in DCS I think a good mission with this POD should be setting a compound with a lot of barracks, infantry,  crates, fuel, soft vehicles and the mission is just put those grenades inside the compound not worrying about the number of kills you will get.

Revisiting this post I noted the Note 3 - two-bullet cartridge 🤔

And I learned something new today. 🤯

So instead of 810 m/s you get 730 m/s and 780-700 m/s?

Reduced penetration, but more rounds... and with different amounts of drop (might deal with ranging errors by bracketing a target). Sounds like an interesting option to try.

Thanks! This should be useful.

It is really important to consider any side-slip, wind, and the additive effect of the velocity of the helicopter when using these (that indicated airspeed is important)!!

I personally suspect that the rigidity of the hardpoint mountings are over-estimated in DCS (for the Ka-50 and Su-25 as well)... and gunpods should have higher dispersion as a result. It'd be useful in the case of the grenade launchers to have a bit more lateral spread.
