packer_edge Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 As I've been messing around with the setting in DCS I haven't really noticed a huge different in how the game looks in VR (other than without MSAA the shimmering is really bad). When I turn on the FPS counter, and then mess around with the settings, turns out it doesn't really matter what I do, the FPS is the same. Turn everything down low, or turn virtually everything to max, and I'm basically sitting at 40 - 52 FPS in a free flight mission. Fly down low over a city, or at a higher altitude, no change. Seems strange to me since everything I'm reading about in these and other forums, people are talking about how much the setting changes alter their FPS. Makes me wonder if there is something really obvious that I'm no cluing in to. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz RTX 3080 32 BG RAM Reverb G2
speed-of-heat Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 MSAA changes require a restart to be effective. You will be able to tell my looking at your pc screen, not hmd, MSAA enabled the border is black, MSAA disabled the border is blue. If you have a monitoring tool that shows CPU, memory, ssd load etc you can figure out the bottleneck. Make sure motion reprojection is disabled in steamvr, it will limit your framerate ~45 DCS Web Editor - New 3D Mission Editor for DCS that runs in your browser DCS Web Viewer free browser based mission planner 4090 RTX, 13700KF, water cooled, Quest 3

I'll pay attention to that next time I'm in. 31 minutes ago, winghunter said: Looks like you're not GPU bound. I definitely have reprojection disabled. I tried enabling it to see if it would help, and it was one of the only factors I found that actually caused a hit to my FPS. I could barely reach 40 with it on.

Using intel XTU, still seem to have RAM left (was using 22 of 32 GB) and the CPU barely reached 20%. The only items of note were the "Package temperature" which was almost to max and the "Thermal Throttling" which went on immediately ... just can't figure out why given nothing seems overly taxed that I can tell.
speed-of-heat Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Total cpu is almost an irrelevant measurement. As dcs only uses a few cores at the same time today. Given that you ave an i7-10700 you will have 8 cores and 16 with hyper threading… between 10-20% cpu utilisation is fully normal. Ram is fine and normal , depending on your settings, but you might want to see what other processes are running… so without dcs switched on what is your idle cpu utilisation. I found that I had a bunch of processes that would suck cpu cycles things like led lighting… or fan control software etc… that actually you don’t need, or crappy AV, you need an AV etc… I can’t give you an exact list but this can have a considerable performance impact. more concerning yo say you have an i7-10700 is that a k variant, e.g. can you overclock it at all, because 2.9ghz is likely not going to help… but give out are already thermal throttling that might be a later discussion, re thermal throttling what is your cooling solution? What case is it in? overall I suggest you work through my performance guide which you can find here 1 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat

I'll have a look at your guide. Yeah, I have a Dell Alienware R11. Fan cooled (just the stock fan setup). Doing a bit more looking around, seems like airflow may not be a strong suit of the case setup. Sitting at idle, CPU jumps back and forth between 2% and 7% consumption, and sits at about 4.5 GHZ (I assume that means it's using "turbo")
speed-of-heat Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 So you might want to try and track down what’s causing the cpu to jump… use task manager. And order by cpu utilisation. And see what causes the cpu to jump, it should be possible to get this under 2%. the R11 doesn’t have the best cooling reputation… airflow is super important in getting your pc and graphics card cool. I don’t know if you can take the shroud off, or open the side and see if that helps?
