jasonbirder Posted January 9, 2022 Posted January 9, 2022 I'd always assumed that (and indeed my current PC has) having DCS ona seperate SSD to my OS gave me a small advantage as it seperates out the access to the two... However for my new PC my main SSD is going to be a PCI-E Gen 4 Drive, now given its faster - would it better to have my DCS install on that (as well as my OS) or install on a seperate Gen 3 M2 drive (which will be seperate) but by necessity slower. I've literally no idea what the optimal aproach would be...
Bossco82 Posted January 10, 2022 Posted January 10, 2022 Hi Jason, I looked into this quite a bit as I was also unsure what to do. I have a X570 with 2x M2 Nvme capable slots. I also already had a 1tb Sabrent Nvme Pciex4 Gen4 SSD. I used to have my OS and DCS installed on this single drive. DCS ran fast and fine on this setup. I sometimes upgrade PC's for friends/family/word of mouth and if I upgrade something. Sometimes, I get left with what I have taken out to keep or sell on eBay. So I first got a Crucial MX500 Sata type SSD. I transferred just DCS onto this drive to see if it made a difference. There was very little difference in game regarding looking around or changes in scenes. However the actual game loading and mission loading times were slower. Not by much but it was definitely about 30% slower. So the Gen 4 Nvme showed some advantage over a Sata MX500 Then just before Xmas I upgraded a 1tb Sabrent M2 Nvme Pciex4 Gen3 to a 4tb drive for a friend of mine. He offered me the 1tb Gen3 drive for a steal of a price with the heatsink so I had it for my system. So now I transferred only DCS onto this Sabrent Gen3 Nvme. There is no difference what so ever at all regarding Gen3 vs Gen4 and DCS loading etc. Watching HW monitor and also knowing only DCS was on that drive in a month the highest recorded read speed has been 1550mb per/s. So there you go Gen3 vs Gen4 no difference. Nvme vs Sata SSD, small difference for loading only. If you have DCS and Windows OS on a Gen4 Nvme the drive is so fast you wont notice any other drive access by the Windows OS. The only advantage to having DCS on a separate installs when your talking about Nvme drives is in case the OS somehow gets corrupted, you wont need to download/install DCS again. I hope that answers your question mate because I was unsure of the same thing. 2 1
jasonbirder Posted January 11, 2022 Author Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) Perfect! No real difference - i'll be putting in a Gen 4 drive for Windows...and speed wise it makes no difference if I put DCS on there as well, but as I too will have a Gen 3 drive kicking about (from my current build) I could use my 2nd MVME slot for that and put my DCS install on that (for organisation purposes) and I won't be losing out either... Bossco82 Posted January 11, 2022 Posted January 11, 2022 Jason, thats how I have mine setup now. Gen 4 OS/programs, 2nd Gen 3 DCS only. 1
