I have an 8700k clocked to 4.9ghz. Guessing a move to the 12700k, which has a boost clock of 5.1gHz, will not yield much improvement in DCS, given its dependency on FSB clocks rather than cores>2. Anyone like to comment?

The i7 12700K will give some overall performance lift from the i7 8700K, no doubt, but (IMO) unless you already got (or planning to get) a high-end GPU, such as Nvidia RTX3080, AMD RX6800XT, etc, I honestly do not think you'll see enough of a boost to justify the monetary expense.
Not with DCS and its current limitations, that is, because it has become much more dependent on GPU performance and on RAM ammount.

If you can, wait for the 4th quarter of 2022.
There will be new launches from Intel with 13th gen "Raptor Lake" (and Z790 motherboards), as wel as AMD with Ryzen 7000 series (5 nm), which are expected to perform already better than the newest bestest stuff of today.
Your i7 8700K is still a pretty good CPU, more so if it's overclocked (all-core 4.9 Ghz?), so you won't suffer much until those are out. 🙂

FWIW:

I have recently made this move over christmas myself.

From i7 8700k, to 12700k and so far it's been far more of an uplift than I expected it to be.

Frequencies might seem the same, but the IPC has seen huge uplifts.

Minor OC on the 8700k, I could have run it at 5ghz, but not something I would rely on come summer and ambient temps go up, my usual cinebench r23 score was around 9500 points on the 8700k.

My main use in DCS is VR with a G2, if you are on 2d I doubt you can get much benefit, it seems DCS has some limiter in it past 120fps.

In VR on the other hand my cpu frametimes has gone from 16-20ms to 6-9 ms, even GPU frametimes have improved by about 5ms at least, and that is with the 12700k running stock settings still.

And the gpu frametimes aren't actually comparable since before I was running openvrfsr at 70%, with the 12700k it runs smoother, and faster without FSR and at 100% steamvr resolution.

In short: My old build was

i7 8700k @ 4.8ghz all core fixed.

32GB @ 3200mhz

3090.

Reverb g2. @ 0.7 FSR, steamvr resolution to 100%

Getting about 16-20ms, spiking to 30ms in some situations for either GPU or CPU.

After upgrade:

i7 12700k stock settings for now (K was actually $5 cheaper than the F variant 🤷‍♂️)

32GB@3600mhz (DDR 4)

3090

Reverb G2. @ No FSR, steamvr resolution to 100%

Getting 6-9ms CPU frametimes.

12-15ms GPU frametimes.

Thanks for the reply #LucShep Not sure if the 2080ti qualifies as a 'high end' gpu nowadays, and yes all 6 cores running @ 4.9Ghz.

Very detailed response #Bob_Bushman.. What would those frame times  translate to in FPS?

My frame time seems to be fairly fixed at 22ms GPU (FPS locked at 45, but can dip). That would be comparable with your result with the 3090 on 8700@4.8.

Not sure what you mean by FSR, as only settings I can change on the G1 are the pixel density in game and the resolution multiplier in steam.

Couple of days ago I lost bidding on a RTX2080Ti (ebay) as last minutes it went berserk, and went into the thousand+ Euros! 🤯 *madness*
Yes it is still fairly high end, hold tight on that one of yours.

You're good for quite a while yet - OC'ed 8700K + RTX2080Ti still a potent combo, for sure.

16.6ms is what you need to reach 60fps.
But my use case is VR and that is much more taxing than 2d.

If I was going for 2d then I would probably still be very happy with my 1080ti and 8700k.

Hi guys

New here but not to Dcs,I have a question,I recently upgraded my cpu to a 12700k from an i99900k.

Also new motherboard,z690 asus rog strix

OK so have used the on board oc facility and in hw info and armory crate ,the main cpu frequency shows just under 4.9ghz

Some cores show 5.2/5.4 ghz...

I'm pretty sure my old cpu would hit 5ghz when under load using R23/timespy

Am I missing something

System specs

I7 12700kf,32 gig ddr4 3600,rtx3080,Asus rog strix z690A mobo,Silverstone 1000 power supply,reverb G2
