It's interesting to see how quick & smooth the slats are to extend and retract in that video, it's a very cool system.

Also I wonder, were the leading edge slats on the F-4 variable in their degree of deployment, i.e. would they be half extended at a certain AoA and gradually come out more as AoA increased? or was it either fully in or fully out ?

Asking as on for most fighter (for example F-16, Mirage F1 or F-5 Tiger) the degree of leading edge device (flap or slat) deployment depends on the AoA.

The slats only have 2 discrete positions - in and out. They pop out at 11.5 units AoA and retract at 10.5 units per the -1 manual.

The LE slats were either in or out, no intermediate position; activated by AOA: when AOA increased to 11.5 units, the slats extended, when AOA reduced below 10.5, they retracted. So for giggles (or demo) you could pull until the slats came out, then relax the pull until they came in, and watch then cycle in and out. Whole process was smooth and easy; no big deal once you had seen and felt it.

Also, when you put the Slats Flaps switch to the OUT or OUT AND DOWN position, the slats would extend.

That's a cool action shot. I've been looking for a new desktop image and I think I've finally found it.

We need as many F-4s as we can realistically get. I want to choose Phantoms the way a golfer chooses clubs.

that would be awesome

Yes, i would definitely want to see an F-4B or J without slats when Heatblur release their Navy variant later on. And to be able to compare it with slatted F-4E.
