agamemnon_b5 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Greetings. My purchase of this so far excellent simulator has led me to these forums (considering I also own LOFC I'm surprised I haven't come sooner). Long story short I came to the conclusion that my difficulty with controlling this helicopter came down to Ka-50's rudder falling to center, causing me to yaw all over the place. I searched around and found instructions on deleting the registry. Did that several times but no luck. I deleted the related files in the "Input" folder but again no luck. I have no idea what else could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
slardy Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 While your in the sim you can press: right ctrl + enter and see a display of your input settings that is helpfull for trimming. Maybe this will help you diagnose any problems that you may be having with your rudder. I use the Saitek Pro Rudder and mine works well. It may also be that the autopilot is taking over some of the rudder functions causing you to have strange movements. i.e you have turn to target turned on. Slardy
Stormin_24 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) I had the same problem with my X45 but there is a fix for this in the sim. It's basically the same as in IL2 Forgotten Battles... Go to: 1: Options 2: Click on Control 3: Axis Commands 4: Double click Flight Control Rudder (In Saitek Column) to set rudder (After it is set) click ok and it returns to previous menu. 5: Click on Axis Tune (On bottom of page) for fine tuning You'll have to try different settings to see what works best for your controller... blitz-hawk Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) Do you have the same problem in any other sims? It may be your trim that's causing a problem. Whenever you use the trimmer, keep in mind that it trims the pedals as well. As a result, if you had the pedals deflected a certain amount, trimmed, and left the pedals in that position, your pedal input would be effectively doubled. This would get worse and worse with each subsequent trimming action. Now all we need are force feedback pedals... Edit: Like slardy said, the heading autopilot channel (which should always be left on) also will try to maintain your aircraft's present heading. In diagnosing your problem, I would suggest leaving the flight director on. This will keep the control dampening active, but deactivate the auto stabilization and stop the helicopter from trying to maintain a constant heading. Edited December 28, 2008 by blitz-hawk
MainSail Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I had the same problem I think. In the windows control panel the rudder axis was perfectly centred but in game i always had bit of right rudder input. Very strange. And the solution for me was to uninstall all saitek software and drivers and delete ALL registry items for the saitek controllers. Then unplug the devices and reinstall the latest drivers, reboot and plug de devices back in. That did it for me. Airway Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) I have no problems with my Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals so far. I just have set them up allright in tht Windows control center (deadzones) and in the Simulation settings too. Edited December 28, 2008 by Airway
Spartan1-1 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 In any helo your going to have some rudder input. Flying real aircraft as well. Some of the more powerful civilian piston single engines will wear your legs out. Trim should help. Also, if your not using your waypoints it may be helpful to turn off your autopilot heading channel. I was making this mistake for a while and flying around fighting the autopilots yaw moment constantly. Its good to keep it on while on course, but if your deviating turn it off. agamemnon_b5 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 (edited) A little update: To clarify my issue: my rudder pedals are centered but in the game they will not center and are stuck giving a little bit of right rudder, prevent me from having even a smooth-ish take-off. The input also appears as centered when I hit Ctrl+Enter but the rudder on the aircraft is not. I unplugged all controllers, deleted all registry files, deleted the Saitek folder, reinstalled, reconnected, rebooted, and I am still having this right rudder issue. Just to make sure it wasn't me I unplugged the rudders and the issue disappeared (even with heading hold on). I then went through all the steps again and this time I have a left yaw issue (no left rudder, just a heavy left yaw so I don't know if that is actually rudder pedal related). I get a left rudder issue in LOFC but I have no issues with my ruuder in IL-2 1946. Edited December 28, 2008 by agamemnon_b5 addition [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Airway Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Well, I personally think that is not an issue you have. It might me a trim problem or, what I think, it will be more an autopilot issue. What happens if you deactivate these: They should be on, but some (virtual) pilots state that they do better, deactivating them.
agamemnon_b5 Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 Airway: I decided to reinstall the drivers AND turn off Heading Hold and I do not get a rudder input problem anymore (just the natural low speed yaw). I think my issue was a combination of input device problems and the auto pilot. I am confused about this; at point and in what circumstances should the different autopilot modes be used? If Heading Hold causes issues on taxi then it seems odd that all the checklists out there have it turned on prior to taxi. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Airway Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Glad it works for you now. Normally it's not supposed to cause any issue while flying or taxiing. In real, we were told, they should never be turned off. And if I got it right, theses modes have a max of 20% on the maximum force on the axis to support handling. But someone with more knowledge should confirm that or prove false what I just wrote.
agamemnon_b5 Posted December 29, 2008 Author Posted December 29, 2008 Thanks to everyone for your help. Now I just leave the HDG Hold off until I reach the runway, then I turn it on and do my normal hover checks. Now If I can just get nack of landing ( I don't crash, my landing is just sloppy). A few more hours of practice and I'll move on to weapons and employment!:pilotfly: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
