I'm not calling other posters out and I am not crossing lines. You are supposed to be able to get along in a forum, and avoid discussions that agitate you. Since I'm not here to egg you on, I'll just stick with criticizing the Phantom. I'm a huge fan of the Phantom, but the -E is not interesting or compatible with Naval operations. The Phantom has and will always be a naval jet to many people. I even knew a couple old J-79 mechs. You've already accused me of trying to act superior. You're not seeing that you have already crossed a line - the one where your posts aren't feedback anymore. This is feedback, polite and constructive: "I prefer the F-4J/S and would have liked it to be the first variant." Ok, now the devs know. They'll take note of those who share the sentiment - as well as those who do not. Now going into almost every thread and saying things like "the F-4E is not the right choice" or that it's a bad plane, ignoring its history, ignoring everyone else's proof of its legitimacy for some reason over and over is not constructive. It's long crossed that line. Finally, yes the F-4 started out as a Navy jet. It ended up as a mean, double ugly-looking bomb truck which ALSO performed well, dropped more bombs and shot down more planes than its Naval counterparts.. But if your argument is "lots of people see it as a Navy jet" there are more people all over the world who see their F-4E as their definitive Phantom - USAF personnel and their families, Israelis, Turkish, Japanese, Iranian and Greek. These are points you have never once addressed. Why do their opinions not matter in comparison to yours? Edited November 3, 2022 by SgtPappy 6

Sorry if I've upset you, but I intend to ignore your provocations and I'd appreciate it if you ignored me going forward. If things change and cool down, then maybe we can have some exchanges that don't risk being blown out of proportion. I will continue to voice my opinion about the F-4J/S and my doubts about the F-4E. I'd appreciate if you don't let it ruin your day.
RevampedGrunt Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 People seem to act like there will never be a naval variant. I'll take the E since I can at least use it for countries aside from just the US. The ability for the E to be both Blufor and Opfor just makes it overall better of a choice to start with, then move to the variants with less world wide usage. 2 Current Modules: F-14A/B, F/A-18C, F-16C, F-15E, F-4E, AV-8B, Mirage 2KC, Mirage F-1, Mig-21, AJS-37, A-10C II, F-5E, AH-64D, UH-1H, Ka-50 BS2/BS3, Mi-8MTV2, Mi-24P, SA342, Spitfire, P-47D, BF-109K, Mosquito Tech Pack: WWII Assets Terrain: Syria, Sinai, NTTR
Heinlein Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 I think it's time to take it down a notch even though I always love some internet bloodsport. As previously stated We will get a naval phantom (eventually) so everyone will be happy. Well unless you are one of those that only want the G or EX version that is

Like many who get shouted down and drowned out, we want a Phantom that'll land on a boat and do what it was designed to do in the first place. F4J or S would make for a better interceptor, becuase it has PD radar. BUt F4E is more relevant version as it served not just in the USAF but In multiple foreign air forces, and its a more multirole jet. If being a bomb truck is so bad, the F-4J/S would never have been upgraded to bomb through clouds because that would be an unholy endeavor by your definition. There is a 1972 Tacman available for the F4B/J/N phantoms, and only onboard computer aided bomb delivery mode i noticed was conlabs. Its a like LABS for toss bombing nukes, but added secondary purpose for tossing general purpose bombs. Other than that there is also passing mention of TPQ 10 for USMC but that seems to just be an external based radar director that needed to be setup near a combat ozone ( kind of like GCI but only for air to surface targets within LOS) which to me really sounds like quite a primitive system, considering this concept dated back to late ww2, which would seem redudant the moment aircraft had onboard avionics for computed delivery of munitions. Even pre DMAS, USAF based phantoms didnt just have a Nav computer but also had had AN/ASQ91 weapons release computer set, and as well as A/G Radar for to measure slant range for CCRP esque release. It is present and properly described in the Dash 34's. Seems to me the Air force phantoms have far more computed delivery modes, and thus arent as reliant on manual bombing ( or some form of external course directors) as navy would have been. Although IRRC kirk had said that the anlog stuff was quite finicky and only worked when it was properly calibrated and maintained. that the DMAS stuff was way more reliable, and functioned like in gen 4's minus the HUD. Perhaps the navy didnt see fit to invest in any more dedicated A/G avionics in thier phantoms since they had A4/A6/A7 fleet as dedicated attack platforms. exhausted Posted November 4, 2022 Posted November 4, 2022 It depends on what they were attacking. The Marines got very good at manually aiming their bombs at mortar-tube sized targets. I don't think the Air Force ever benefitted from such high accuracy until they -Ds got lasers.
