kingeider Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 I am wondering if there are any videos out there that show this function in a landing scenario because it was hard enough for me with a disability to both of my hands to find a proper hotas keybinding to use for my controller both my virpil throttle and vkb stick have all kinds of possibilities but its hard to explain with limited motor function in both hands only when the controllers are in certain positions am i able to push certain buttons so for me to see how the dlc rotary is actually gonna benefit carrier landings, or maybe it really does not matter' helps me to orchestrate were things would need to be i my virtual cockpit. i use the virpil CM 2 using the thumb rotary for DLC while switching and holding a hat on the VKB nxt i think its called ' for the dlc/countermeasure key bind! (I still fly with rudder pedals) I do fly the tomcat a lot. I use DLC on every landing. But... I don't always use the adjustment. Often I simply turn DLC on, try and fly a clean approach and 90% of the time that seems to work fine. The Tomcat has a lifting body, and the airframe itself generates about 60% of the lift for the aircraft. It wants to float. DLC spoils some of that lift, enabling you to get the big bird on the ground safely. If you're a little high, DLC fully out, low, all in. The Tomcat has flaps, DLC, speed brake, and wing sweep all to help you lose enough lift to land, or to maneuver. Now, when' you're landing on the boat, there is a draft of wind coming off the ship, the island, and if done correctly, the carrier should be steaming into the wind. Right as you get close to the boat, the airplane gets a big bonus on lift from all that wind, resulting in the airplane floating and a bolter. Even if you're perfectly on the approach path that burble near the boat will mess you up, and that's the time to slap that DLC out fully to counteract that wind and lose just a little bit of wind. I personally use the Virpil throttle, and I bind my DLC axis to the radar elevation axis on the front of the right throttle handle. But, depending on where your hands are, and how far or how little you can reach there might be a better option. Also it seemed from your post that you are holding the "DLC activate/ countermeasures" button. This shouldn't be necessary. Activate, then all you need to do it move the slider to bring the DLC in and out. Or course remember that DLC won't come out until your gear and flaps are down. My personal order is "Gear down below 200" then when they're down and locked, "Flaps out below 180" then DLC active when flaps come down. Then I try and maintain on speed with the throttle and pop out the airbrakes. Set her down on the mains without flare, (remember antiskid ON for runway's "OFF" for the boat") I roll out on the runway until below 90, then pull the airbrake in, gently apply the brakes, pull the flaps up, and fold in the wings just as I'm turning off the active runway. I just moved my hand around my virple throttle, contemplating. I can turn the rotary knob on the far outside left of the throttle with my palm while still moving the throttle back and forth. Perhaps binding the DLC to that rotary might be helpful? (Just and idea, I don't know what movements are harder or easier for you.) I hope this helps you. kingeider Posted December 18, 2022 Author Posted December 18, 2022 (edited) thanks for suggestion as well as the invite! _I do have the DLC bound to the right throttle side rotary which is not really considered an axis its a repeating button or something like that, and will try switching it to the slider on the left throttle front which i used as a zoom but as things change, so to you have to adapt. Now you have given me an idea that if your in and around 200 knots to start landing the throttle will be in the correct position to use the slider effectively with my screwed up hands! Does not work cannot close my hands enough to use the slider effectively oh well the rotary wheel it is than !
