With the announcement of the A-1 and the A-7 in the pipes, it looks like we might eventually have all the aircraft used as Sandy. This got me thinking, what all does DCS need to do CSAR?

I know the HH-3 would be the correct helicopter for the Vietnam era and the HH-53 would be correct for modern CSAR. I really don't have an opinion one way or the other about a flyable HH-3 or HH-53 module, I might not interested in buying them but if other people want them, then why not? I believe I have seen some Hueys with a rescue hoist so it might not be unthinkable to have the UH-1 or UH-60 fly the mission for the blue side. I'm assuming the Mi-8 would fly the mission for forces so equipped.

Next I think we'd need CSAR escort waypoints for attack aircraft

we'd also nee a pilot figure that can climb aboard a chopper.

Your thoughts?

CSAR would be particularly interesting I'm Dynamic Camping. Another attractive mission, quite easy to make. It looks like low-hanging fruit.

That's why I brought it up. It wouldn't be too hard to implement and we have passable flyable and AI assets

Easy enough to script, so I'd imagine DC should have it, too. Particularly since AI tends to get shot down a lot, so they'd generate quite a few of those. 🙂 For the AI implementation, it's basically search and destroy in an area around the pilot, for as long as it takes for the extraction to complete.

It would certainly be cool, and if pilot management is part of DC (I hope it is, complete with pilot names, callsigns and skill levels), it'd be essential to avoid losing your best pilots. Plus, it'd be really cool if, if your wingman gets shot down and ejects, you could set up RESCAP and see the Sandies do their thing on the ground, while the Jollies come in and pick the pilot up. It'd be even better if we had the appropriate helos for the US side, but in Vietnam, Huey sometimes got pressed into rescue role (or even into Sandy role, Huey Hog gunships were good at that).

I loved that part of Falcon 3.0 I'd love to see ED add that when we get a dynamic campaign.

I'd like to know if anyone has any clue about how much Russian pilot rescue practices differ?

I figure with the current line up of modules the roles would be as following

Jolly Green

UH-1,

Mi-8,

Mi-24,

Sandy

A-10,

Su-25,

AH-64,

Ka-50,

Mi-24,

AV-8 ?

"Here's your wallet, a bag of civilian clothing, a bottle of vodka and some bread, now try to get out of there and report when you're back in Russia." 🙂

As for how it's supposed to go, I have no idea, especially these days. AFAIK, Soviets mostly used the Hind as a CSAR aircraft, and either combined the Sandy and Jolly roles by the means of a pair of Hinds, or sent a Mi-8 escorted by Hinds. The Mi-28 might has a similar capability, although the rescue compartment is very small.

The MI-28's passenger compartment isn't modeled in DCS. I don't think it would be too hard to add.

Anyway with what we can use in the mission editor

The Jolly Green would use the standard land and embark waypoints, though it would be nice to have a rope or hoist.

Sandy- right now that can only be filled by attack helicopters since they have an escort mission.

So we're really missing a CSAR escort for attack planes
