I am still on pre 2.8 because of all of the VR performance issues I read about. I have a RTX3060ti with quest 2 and get good performance with most settings on high. But from what I have read 2.8 on average looses 12-15 FPS. I think that would be unplayable.

The reason I ask is I bought the blackshark 3 upgrade but ir requires 2.8.1.

Thanks for any responses.

Some people have better fps and some worse, even with the same hardware. You need to try it.

if it doesnt do well for me, can I go back to the previous version?

Windows and hardware optimization plays a large role in all games, some games are more favourable to Intel/Nvidia, some to AMD systems.

The first thing is how commited to gaming are you? Are you prepared to get rid of all the garbage running in your O.S background, set up paging files in a different drive, set up your start up Aps, shut Windows update down, service, clean up and repair your O.S as often as possible (I do it every day), maximize your case cooling just for gaming?

That's one thing, then I had a lot of heated debates but if anyone is using Ryzens 3/3D, do not expect the maximum performances of them if you bound them with high street RAM kits which will most certainly prevent your CPU controllers to work at their best, especially under load, use Cl14 B.die kits instead. For Intel users, sorry I have too litle experience of the last gen to be of any good advise.

Then once you have done all of that and have no CPU/RAM bottleneck, you will see if you need to upgrade your GPU, which is what I'm about to do, my (last day) excelent EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080Ti vs my new (to be delivered today) Sapphire Radeon RX 7900 XTX Nitro+ Vapor-X 24GB.

Then there is the matter of availability, reliability (bug-free) of VR packages necessary to run DCS and in particular some modules like the Mirage F1.

We're splited between two evils: STEAM and Microsoft, if I can find an alternative to both (Im trying VERY hard) to run my Pico 4 I'll have absolutely no hesitation, their monopole, lack of customer attention (not our problem, ask the other guy) and care and somewhat rather mediocre application of VR to DCS is the best reason to leave them behind, and something else, if you're a Nvidia user, updating your driver will lose you Nvidia Control Panel, now onluy available from Microsoft.... See what I mean?

Eventualy I'll sort out my little issues and it will be good bye to the big Corps. No regret.

For the time being, here is what one of my first flights in the F1 looked like performance wise (1080Ti), with all setting maxed out and anisotropic 16x, not too disapointed, pay attention to RAM and CPU use...

An ps, if anyone knows the stttings to get the same ration in the 2D screen than in VR please let me know.

2.8 really hurt VR performance for me with the Reverb G2.  Years ago VR ran fine with a 1080.  Now I have a 6700xt and the performance is much worse.  Other flight sims run much better than DCS in VR.

Well - nothing new. Every new graphical improvement in DCS has lead to more hardware requirements in the past. It is a shame there is no separate VR-branch for DCS parallel to OpenBeta. The main focus for DCS will never be VR, because the ground layer of the game is for 2D. We can only hope for rapid hardware improvements in the future and maybe DLSS / FSR will do the trick temporarily.

I am happy to report I suffered no frame rate loss in VR after updating to the latest version, whew!

I had both stable and OB until recently, I play mostly in VR and really didn't notice much difference since last update on stable and OB, part of reason I ended up uninstalling stable.

There is a known shadow bug in 2.8, if you are getting bad VR performance try turning shadows off you should get it all back. If you cannot stand to play with shadows off set them all to high (the other options aren't make a difference right now) and try turning down render resolution or something to compensate.
