littlejohn1959 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 How about the Ka-50 was never designed to be operated long enough in one mission to ever come close to reaching the lifespan of the laser. It's also possible the laser receives routine mtce during down time. You guys are flying it as if mtce is not a concern... just keep rearming and heading off to blow stuff up as long as you want. Well, as you now know, the machine has limits. :) IF ,, the manuel , had to state what you just said ,, we ,, wouldnt be having this discussion . your point , is well takin mate . cheers . Tango Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 There is no warning. It is not a bug (Aside from the switch flipping issue) And it does not need to be looked into ;) It was omitted from the manual for un-known reasons (possibly oversight). You have now been informed as to the lasers limitations. Next step: Live with it. ;) I haven't experienced laser failure yet. When it's not required, I switch it off. What would be nice to know is under exactly what conditions it is firing? Some people here say the life of the laser is short, but then some lasers are like that. It depends heavily on what kind of laser it is. Best regards, Tango.
GGTharos Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 The laser fires when you press the enter key to lock onto a target, or to ground stabilize. It will also fire in a manual mode and boresight mode as well. If you're being sparing with the use of the laser, then you won't see failure. Ragtag Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I believe a similar feature is modelled in LockOn FLaming Cliffs to if i remember it correctly in the SU-25t plane. In LockOn the laser has to be turned off after about a minute due to overheat and needs cooldown. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] I7 3930K. 16Gb Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz. Asus P9X79 Deluxe. Asus GTX680 2Gb. Dropbear Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 Asfaik it is common that the laser emiters of laser-range-finders on helicopters, tanks and airplanes have to cool down after usage. So I guess just like with all those systems, the laser-range-finder on the Blackshark has to cool down and must not be used continuously or it will burn-out or whatever. So since you have this knowledge now too, just switch it off dammit when not needed and stop whining. But if this information is missing in the manual it might be good to add it for the uninformed or add it to the README if possible. it would be easier to stop 'whining' as you so enigmatically put it, if you knew the boundary conditions at which the laser stopped operating. I'm still not convinced there is no bug relating to failures soon after a rearm.
FADM Stern GNSF Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Today I had my first Laser Failure, and I know it is because I was whacking a lot of targets. I do have one question about it thought that I havent seen mentioned yet. If the Laser dies, does it stay dead for the rest of the game, or will rearming/refueling at an airport fix it? I tried landing for a rearm but the Laser stayed dead. If they do get fixed, how do you know when its done ? (When I rearm under power, they call rearming complete, but if I take off [even after 5 min] he yells at me "hey, what are you doing". Is there a way to tell them "ok, im leaving now ?) I understand the whole laser burning out, just dont know if you can have it fixed while in game, or its gone for the rest of the game. Thanks all, I really appreciate all the help. Not only do I have a great game, I have super Developers and people here to help me in my really lame moments :-) Try the Rest, then Join the Best

NOpe no way to tell them get away from me i wanna take off lol but if you switch the spu 9 radio communicator selector back and you are not on interkom anymore you at least can't hear them saying that to you =) I understand the whole laser burning out, just dont know if you can have it fixed while in game, or its gone for the rest of the game. You should e able to repair it this way... land, turn everything off , wait 3 minutes and start everything back up. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] F-14 Tomcat Rest in Peace (and hopefully get reborn in DCS!) FADM Stern GNSF Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 Thanks for the tip Maverick, I will give that a try :-) not to worried about the ground crew yelling, Its kind of an ammusing moment after some nailbitting battle lol. I just wish I didnt have to shut everything off, as I never have any luck with the auto start up (seems to screw up INU and my auto-pilots). I will try it, and try to remember what switches I touched so I can put them back (as not to upset the auto start lol). Try the Rest, then Join the Best
Maverick-GER- Posted February 10, 2009 Posted February 10, 2009 well just pull the 2 red levers on the left and switch generators and batteries off... should be enough then wait around 3 minutes i think it takes for repairs and then switch on gorund power if available, generators and battery and start up the engines again. or land and use the auto shutdown =) and after the 3 minutes the auto start (shutdown is same sequence as autostart just with "end" instead of "home" ) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] F-14 Tomcat Rest in Peace (and hopefully get reborn in DCS!)
