Hi everyone,

I took a massive plunge before Xmas and bought a good spec rig and the Reverb G2. I’ve been on flights sims for over 30 years. I have spent a week solidly trying to get the system to run effectively and would welcome and really appreciate any advice on what I can do.

The issue

Ghosting on moving objects, similar to what we used to get back in the days of old CRTs with poor refresh rates. I can move my head ultra quick inside the cockpit and there is no ghosting from any cockpit area, it’s all outside. It’s making the game unplayable for me. The Sabre looks incredible inside, but outside it ps a ghostly world of pain. I get no issues on IL2, or other driving sims in VR. FPS is off the charts good.

I’ve  followed all the key advice on here: OpenXR, changing shadows, pixels, density, refresh rates, water, MSAA, VSync etc. I’m wondering if I’m missing something really basic like which port to use in the Nvida slot. As I say, please help as the machine is going out of the window shortly. I appreciate you’ll get all of these queries all the time.

Specs

i9 13,000k

RTX Suprim 4090

64 gig ram

SSD etc

all the best and thanks,

if you are using open xr, then i susepct that the ghosting you are seeing is as a result of Motion Smoothing/Reprojection, so what can you do you have 4 functional choices:

1) Retain Motion Smoothing, and Open XR  and live with it

2) retain Motion Smoothing  and go back to SteamVR, it handles smoothing better than OXR to date

3) stay on OXR and your current settings, but drop to 60hz, not for everyone (but the route i have gone), I would recommend Turbo Mode in OXR Toolkit

4) stay on OXR and reduce your current settings to achieve a consistent 90hz

I hope this helps

Hi,

My experience is very, very similar to yours in terms of my hardware and ghosting.

There are far more knowledgeable people on here to help but i ended up turning ASW off and making sure i can consistently hit 80fps without it and setting my headset to 80hz. This has removed the ghosting albeit with a small amount of graphical compromise.

MSAA X 4 and SSAA X 2 on, full res in quest 2 and 1.0 PD. Shadows seems to be a problem in 2.8 according to other forum discussions

I didn't get to see Vr performance in 2.7 but i gather it was much better so im hoping to turn the few compromises up if it gets resolved down the line.

All in all looks great now and can have a dogfight without feeling drunk.

Eagerly following this post to see if any other tips come up

90hz seemed achievable but i like eye candy so didn't want to reduce the graphics anymore

Cheers

Yes ASW has to be turned off - doesn't always work the way you think it will.   The Motion Smoothing algorithm, as currently implemented, sometimes causes these odd ghosting issues.  It happens to me with the Pimax 8kx.  I currently achieve around 55fps solidly with OpenXR and using FFR etc, and I have any "smart smoothing" or "fill in with an extra predictive frame" features turned off everywhere.

System specs:
i9-11900KF OC to 5500Mhz with water block- MSI RTX4090 OC - ASUS ROG HERO VIII - 64GB DDR4 @3600MHz- 1TB SSD OS - 2TB SSD GAME- 1000W PSU
Pimax 8kx - TM Pendular Pedals - TM Warthog Throttle - TM Waterhog HOTAS - TM F/A-18 Grip - WinWing Pheonix MIP/UPC - Homemade Landing Gear control.  Andre's SimShaker driving two subwoofers and seat kickers for seat and control column vibration - sketchpad linked to OpenKneeboard - VoiceAttack with VIACOM Pro
