Svend_Dellepude Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Some advice needed. I'm considering a dual boot install on my XP system. Just not sure if i should go with the 64 or 32 bit edition. Asus maximus formula MB and E6750 2.66 @ 3.00 CPU. To be honest I'm a little confused about what CPU takes advantage of what bit resolution. Any advice? wickedfastball Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Mainboard and processor have little to do with choosing the operating system (compatibility concerns aside). The primary reason to use a 64-bit OS is to utilize more than 4GB of RAM. If you do not have (or do not plan to upgrade to) 4GB or more, a 64-bit OS is a waste.
DTWD Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Aren't they the same price? It's a bit of a no brainer, 64. Regards [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
DarkWanderer Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 64 gives a little advantage on certain games, that are built specifically for it. However, the only widely known game I know to employ that for the moment are Crysis series, so, unless you're going to have 4GB+ of RAM in near future - choose 32 bit. You want the best? Here i am...
Svend_Dellepude Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Thanks, I just thought there was a difference in the way the OS handles duo core in 32 or 64 bit... Guess I am wrong. Anyway im running with 4 GB RAM on my XP machine [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win10 64, Asus Maximus VIII Formula, i5 6600K, Geforce 980 GTX Ti, 32 GB Ram, Samsung EVO SSD.
rapid Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 A 64bit O/S will work great with the new CPU's that are around today..............but you wont see much benefit if the Application that your using is not optimised for 64bit. WynnTTr Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If you're upgrading to an i7 soon, or thinking of getting more than 4Gb RAM in the next few months, get Vista 64. Or, if you can wait a year, go for Windows 7 - it's far superior to Vista.
Feuerfalke Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Thanks, I just thought there was a difference in the way the OS handles duo core in 32 or 64 bit... Guess I am wrong. Anyway im running with 4 GB RAM on my XP machine Only between XP and Vista, not between 32bit and 64bit. My recommendation is Vista 64bit, though. The support for hardware and software is nearly flawless and Windows 7 will be the last OS that even offers a 32bit version. If you want to invest in the future, 64bit is the way to go, because of upcoming software AND hardware. In the meanwhile several games come with 64bit versions either on seperate DVDs or just different executables and they already start to support more than 2 GIG of RAM.
