Mission 7 engagement

I am somewhat confused by Mission 7. I am referring to the "Fox-2" engagement after the first run. I am always able to get a sidewinder shot after the element splits and it nearly always hits. The kill, however, does not register, when Paco shoots his bandits and claims a kill, Slick still calls "2's engaged" and I have to turn with the bandit and kill it again. Am I meant to engage in a dogfight or is this a bug? No complaint, I am enjoying the campaign, just a bit confused.

Yes, Paco wants you to practice engaged BFM - you’ll need it later - so hits up to that point are not counted.
