I struggle with Mission 1.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

this is my first DLC campaign i want to fly. But currently more frust than lust.

Mission 1.

I start, i fly straight ahead until AWACS tells me there is a single contact. Ok, i turn towards it, but i dont get him on the radar (i basically never find something on the radar in the 40 miles-mode. When i get closer either a SAM gets fired on me, or the nice female voice tells me to fly somewhere else. Nevertheless, the contact is not there anymore after some minutes of flying.

Ok, i go on the new heading. Then, AWACS tells me that some bogeys have pop-up, i go that direction. I guess these are the Mig21 (i dont know where they start exactly). Then i fly a while around Krasnodar - i get 4 or more times the message, that a group has pop up. But they never come so close that a fight will start. When i fly 1-2 minutes south of Krasnodar, of course the SAM hell starts to happen. So back to the north, area around the 3 lakes between Krymsk and Krasnodar. THen i fly and fly and fly...and nothing happens until my tank is empty.

Mission 1, second try.

I start, i fly according the waypoints on the briefing. No contacts get reported by AWACS. nothing, zero. not the single contact, not the group of Mig 21.

So, what am i doing wrong.

This is really my first scripted DCS campaign und i dont get the point what i am doing wrong. What is the key that the mission continues? If there are no contacts, nothing to do, i would normaally return to base and finish the mission. But i wont let me, because obviously i am missing some targets?

Some hints for me to "enjoy" the campaign?

Thanks a lot for posting here. So, in the mission 1. The F-5 radar is very susceptible to notching, and the plane that you have to reccon is notching your radar, so, use the AWACS menu to get bearings to it, also, build the geometry on your head to be able to intercept it, in other words, don't steer towards the heading that the AWACS gives you, when you ask for bogey dope, but plan to intercept ahead of it's course, you can pick the contact on the 20 miles radar, and at that point you can see it visual too. Now, as being the first mission, you won't be doing any fighting on this, you will be fired upon by SAM's right when you are very close to intercept the bogey, it's your decision to make, you stick with the bogey or die, to avoid the SAM's you have to apply the same tactics as in Vietnam, that's why you are getting the "take it down" calls. That was the tactic used in Vietnam to avoid SAM's by the time you evade the SA-6's and SA-3's most likely you would loose your SA and the bogey will be far from reach. The Russians are scrambling Mig-21's to escort their reccon plane and you are getting the call to come home. You are low on fuel, most likely disoriented and it would be a fight that you will loose. So you return to base and live to fight another day. There will plenty of fighting on the next mission. This campaign is scripted indeed, but you have some decisions to make as a pilot, now, the triggers are very tight, so you must hit the waypoints properly, cutting corners will make the progress very difficult, that's what i'm assuming it happened at your second try.

THanks for your Feedback.

But how do i know where exactly the triggers are, so that the mission continues?

I mean finally i wont be able to intercept and wont be able to fight the Mig21....means i reaturn more or less to the base then and finish the mission. How do i know i can return now to the base?

Overlord gives you the RTB order. Listen to the Overlord lady voice, she tells you what do to. When AWACS or CIC tells you to do something, it's an order, and must be followed, that's how the chain of command works.
