I am thinking about buying a VR headset. After reading this thread:

What is OTT? What is ASW? And why would you want to do 'supersampling' to generate more pixels than the headset can display? Wouldnt that degrade FPS? Or maybe I am confusing supersampling with something else.

Those are Oculus specific acronyms, Oculus Tool Tray - OTT, the app they're using to set super sampling in their headsets, and Asynchronous warp - ASW, the term their app uses for everyone else knows as reprojection.  You might want to put in higher super sampling if your using some sort of down scaling effects first, that can deliver a comparable high quality image from a lower cost off the GPU in some HMD's.

More or less yes.

OTT is used as a front-end app of the Oculus Debug Tool that comes with the Oculus Software when you buy a Quest 2 or Quest Pro headset. Among other stuff it also does Supersampling which helps improving clarity in the headset and, as mentioned by Nodak, helps with upscaling technics to improve FPS without sacrificing clarity.

The main factors in buying a VR headest (IMHO) are:

1. Budget

2. Use (standalone, PCVR, both)

3. Technical characteristics (lenses, resolution, FOV)

4. Display port connection or compressed image over USB or wifi.

and the list and discussion can go on for ever 🙂
