iQyThradz3137i Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 (edited) Hey, Currently looking if anyone has been using the 7900xt with a VR Headset? What kind of settings can you have with that card? Edited April 8, 2023 by iQyThradz3137i
mrsylvestre Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 (edited) Edit: 6950xt, not 7950xt (brain fart, spent too much time with a VR HMD on lately) 7950xt 6950xt here, but undervolted and limited boost freq to 2350 MHz, so about equivalent to your 7900xt about equivalent to a 6900xt, which is inferior to a 7900xt. CPU is a 5800x3d. I get very fluid gameplay with reasonable IQ with a PICO 4. VR default preset graphics in DCS settings, streaming via USB using Pico's Streaming Assistant with the "HD" preset. Only installed SteamVR at this point, I have yet to play with other link, streaming options and composers/API's (wifi, virtual desktop, OpenXR etc). Just don't expect the same image resolution and scenery complexity in VR than what you are used to with the flat screen. What is near you, e.g. your cockpit or that bandit in your crosshairs will be very well rendered, landscape at mid/far range will be more blurry/hazy. Currently, VR is a tradeoff: immersion is incredible with the sense of depth making dogfights, formation flying and landings much easier, IQ is obviously lower than 2D because there are a lot of pixels to push to the HMD and inherent limitations of current VR hardware. TED Posted April 11, 2023 Posted April 11, 2023 Not on 7900xt but been using 6900xt for about a year and a 5800x3d and g2. I love the 6900xt and get excellent results with most dcs settings maxed. Openxr resolution at 135 and use radeon chill to lock steady 47fps. Very smooth and looks great. A bit of tweaking in radeon adrenaline but nothing complicated. I can only imagine 7900xt is even better.

I am using an rx 6700 and don't really notice any changes with adrenalin. Could you please share what settings have worked for you? 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).
TED Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 Radeon chill on and set to 47fps. Adjusted gpu tuning clock speeds to find a safe highest frequency and then set minimum frequency to about 2-300 mhz under the max speed. If u get any instability lower these in 50mhz intervals. For me that was around 2700mhz and 2400mhz. If you also have amd cpu ensure amd smart access memory is enabled. I also have tuned the power tuning and upped it to max. that’s about all that is needed. Everything else I do via openXR toolkit. I also spend quite a bit of effort on general pc sanitation. Clear out wmr room and reduce all other unnecessary operations in the background especially for vr. You can Google and find wmr empty room. Minimize always wmr window and all other windows when dcs is open. I use process lasso to make sure dcs is the highest priority and using all cores now dcs is mt. Anything else in the background eating up RAM, cpu or gpu power that is not essential i get rid of. I also recently switched to using Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi and that helps a bit. Bluetooth is switched off and I only use wired connections. This I found out early. When the Bluetooth is on it’s constantly scanning for new devices and sometimes connects and this caused some disruptions. Personally I find adrenaline very easy to use and way prefer it to nvidia. I had a 3080 previously and actually for a while had both 6900xt and 3080 and was testing side by side for a couple months. In my view the 6900xt was superior in almost all tests with dcs so I kept that and sold the 3080. in general now with 6900xt and g2 I get a steady 60fps ( although reduce to 47fps for smoother play) in a f18 low level around caucuses or on deck of super carrier. I don’t use msaa but use openXR to custom res of 135 or so and this makes everything nice and clear. Using fsr in openXR toolkit.

I've overclocked and undervolted and it is quite stable now and I'm getting low temperatures with a custom fan curve. 3 hours ago, TED said: If you also have amd cpu ensure amd smart access memory is enabled. Have you tried any of the advanced graphics settings? They don't seem to work for VR. 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).
iQyThradz3137i Posted April 16, 2023 Author Posted April 16, 2023 My thing is before i buy it what kind of graphics preset will i have with it to run good on multiplayer. Also any VR Headsets that US USB C to power it and DP to run video?
Voyager Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 I'd expect it to be comparable to a 3080/3090 in VR. Tests from banks tech showed it was at about that level in general: The Hellhound RX 7900 XTX Takes on the RTX 4080 with 50 VR & PC Games – BabelTechReviews https://babeltechreviews.com/hellhound-rx-7900-xtx-vs-rtx-4080-50-games-vr/ Based on recent leaks from Moore's Law is Dead, it sounds like there's an issue in the render pipeline that AMD hasn't been able to fix in software yet. I think it was in his Blackwell vs RDNA4 strategy discussion, but am not able to check right now. Basically they kept getting some artifacts if they ran the pipeline at full clock so they had to add some pauses to make it work. So I would not expect it to get better at this point. You're probably looking at Ampere grade performance in VR, with oddities. However I would not expect it to perform worse than RDNA2, so your mileage may vary.
Wali763 Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) If you go over to the amd.com support-forum, there are several threads about VR-performance of the 7000-GPUs, this being the longest I think: 7900xtx Low Performance in SteamVR and VR in gene... - AMD Community 7000card dpmt seem to be that good in VR. Some report, that their 7900XRX is as good as 6800XT in VR. I have a 6950XT and its fine. Wanted at first to get a 7900XTX but did not because of the reports of its poor VR-performance. Right now Im very happy with my decision. If my card were 20% faster though, that would be great. I would not bet on AMD getting their issues with the 7000-cards sorted. Its already been 5 months since its release. Edited April 17, 2023 by Wali763
Voyager Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 @Wali763 I think we will know more when the Navi 32 and 33 chips hit market. From what I can tell they were waiting until they could figure out whether they could fix the issue in drivers, along with clearing out the RDNA2 stock. It is sort of sounding like they've ended up doing a partial fix in hardware, but it's not a complete fix yet either. I would not be surprised if we see Navi 32/33 perform somewhat than 31, and sometime next year for AMD to do a 6950 type refresh with GDDR7 MCUs and core compute units that perform where they were expecting the 7900's to originally be. But that's the thing: there will always be something better around the corner.
WipeUout Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 I had a 6900xt for over a year and was happy with its performance despite AMD's low priority for VR. And then I switcehd back to nvidia and it was a big difference both in visual quality and VR performance. I did consider waiting for the 7000 series and I am glad I did not. Although they cost way too much, Nvidia cards are simply better for VR. 1 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9800X3D, RTX 4090, 96GB DDR 5, MSI Tomahawk 870E, Crucial 2TB x 2, TM WARTHOG COMBO + PENDULAR RUDDER PEDALS, THE AMAZING PIMAX 8K X, Sony 5.1 Spks+SubW | DCS, A-10C_II, AH-64D, F-14/15E/16/18, F-86F, AV-8B, M-2000C, SA342, Huey, Spitfire, FC3.
Terzi Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 I also have 6900xt and its perfect with VR. No complaints at all. Most dense servers have no issues especially after MT.
