Flummi Posted April 30, 2023 Posted April 30, 2023 (edited) Hello folks, prices oft GPUs are coming slowly down here in Germany. So my suggestion is to upgrade my graphics card (RX 6800 XT) to a 4090. My question to this: Is it really worth it? I mean does the speed gain really matter? With MT and now little better drivers from AMD the stuttering show has nearly gone; some graphical eyecandy could be realized. My settings in DCS are almost middle. With this I get ~40 fps. What's your opinion? Greetings, Flummi Oooh PS: I am flying with a HP Reverb G2 in native resolution with OpenXR without MR (seems to doesn't work with AMD) and MT. blkspade Posted May 2, 2023 Posted May 2, 2023 Well I know first hand that the 3090 offers a much better experience than the 6800XT in VR with a G2, so a 4090 should be awesome. http://104thphoenix.com/
xoxen Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 I´m not doing VR but switched from a 1080Ti -> RX 6800 XT -> 3080 -> 4080 In the following you always see the amount of extra FPS I gained over the predecessor Basis --> +10% --> +50% --> +40% I expect a very high benefit going from the RX 6800 XT to a 4090. The 4090 is a beast. Flummi Posted May 3, 2023 Author Posted May 3, 2023 Is the advantage oft Nvidia this big in relation to AMD? The RX6000-Series is known for its huge raw-performance. Hmmm.... ok. Thought that Nvidia has its benefits in software like DLSS and so on. Limaro Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 I think it's hard to get a good opinion of evaluating if it's worth spending that amount of money. There are just too many factors. However, here is what I do, to get a clearer view of things before buying something: 1. 40 FPS is not enough to play, I agree. But you mentioned middle details. Can you set them that low, so that you get what you want as target? (60 or 90 for example). But do not make inacceptable compromises (resolution, or too bad textures is cockpit, you should still be able to read everything). 2.a) Can't you reach your target FPS: Yes, then It worth maybe really. 2.b) You reached the target FPS you want. Now look at how the world looks like. 3. Compare to how it would look like having a 4090 with 90FPS. (use Forum data from user with compareble setup) This is what you should compare. The visual details you get for a fixed target fps. Are these details worth buying the 4090? Thought that Nvidia has its benefits in software like DLSS and so on. Nvidia is strong at high resolutions, I forgot to mention that I used 3x 1440p displays at that time. Now I´m using a wide screen with 5120x1440 and everything is nearly maxed out. But this is all is 2D. Based on observations I did in regards to VR I read that Nvidia also outperforms the AMD cards in every aspect when I compared the RTX 3080 with the direct counterpart RX 6800 XT. The happy I was getting the AMD card at that time the more happy I was to replace it with the RTX 3080. Even going from the 3080 to the 4080 brought very much performance gain. I´m not a fanboy and gathered these experiences by myself. shastasm Posted May 3, 2023 Posted May 3, 2023 If you got money to burn, go for it :). I dig my 4080 for DCS. 1 2020 Rig Chasse: bequiet! derneuemann Posted May 4, 2023 Posted May 4, 2023 What can I say, first two tests that help a little further. https://babeltechreviews.com/rtx-4090-performance-45-games-vr-pro-apps-benchmarked/ https://hothardware.com/reviews/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4070-ti-review-with-asus?page=3 Here you can see that the 4090 should be around 70-90% ahead of the 3090 (if the GPU is not limited). The 3090 is definitely ahead of the 6800XT. Also interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtMSJkIdrlE&t=81s Here you can see that AMD VR can also do quite well. Also motion reflection which surprised me. The video creator estimates that his 4090 system is a good 70-90% faster than the 7900XTX system. With R9 7950, the video was before MultiThread Beta, so it's also possible that the 7950 still slightly falsifies the values. What can be concluded from this in the end... The 4090 is worth it in any case, you have to decide whether it is worth twice the performance, possibly plus 5-10% of the price of the 4090. I personally think that the 4090 still delivers very high fps with most settings on the highest settings. If you weren't using an HP G2, but a Pico or Quest 2, I would also consider the 7900XTX, as the video clearly shows that that's more or less enough.
