Can't settle yaw when auto hovering? Bizarre behavior

So I come to a hover... engage auto hover... the helicopter will slew to the right... sometimes *violently*... it will often settle down, but not where I want it to be pointing.

Is it just turning into the wind? I thought if I engaged the hover and hit the trim button, it would try to keep me pointed where I was previously pointed?

I'm on the campaign mission 'Return to Teberda', and at the target location, the above happens.

Also, when I try to stabilize for landing on this mission, I can't get the helicopter to stabilize at all... it's like every time I trim it's getting worse and worse, and in auto hover is doing some insane manuevers (big sweeping, banking turns). The end result of this was that I was auto hovering and auto descending to make a landing, and then things went goofy, then I lost all lift to ground effect (or whatever it's called w/ helicopters) and fell out of the sky.

I find that if i trim out to minimize all movement and then hit auto-hover i get much better results, was having similar issue as you.

Yeah, that's totally what I'm doing initially... get everything stable, trimmed, then engage it.

The other problem I was having later was that I could NOT trim it... it had a ton of yaw regardless of where I trimmed it.

You'll get a lot of "well I find"(s)...Here's mine:

Well I find that Autohover works best when I am already established in a decent hands-and-feet off hover with zero vertical velocity. Once that's done, engage. After changing heading, keep stabilized two seconds before trimming. The nose will 'hunt' for a few seconds before the Autohover accepts the new heading.

Sounds like you might have "AUTO TURN ON TARGET" button engaged while having the shkval pointed in a different direction. If you turn on Auto hover when this button is pushed it will continuously try to point the aircraft in the direction of the shkval regardless of how much you trim the rudder. (I made same mistake when I started playing). Turn off the auto turn on target button before you hit auto hover and Im sure your problem will go away.

Nope, that's not it... I had it both on and off at different times, and the nose would point away from the aim point regardless... and it's only been really on this one mission, thought the kind of cumulative degeneration of the trim control has been a problem on other ones.

Could be wind that is turning the nose. As mentioned, it is necessary to trim correctly before engaging auto hover. I find the following approach works:

1. hold down trim button (do not release)

2. slow to below 10kts

3. Adjust cyclic and collective to maintain a rough hover

4. adjust rudder to maintain desired heading

5. release trim button

6.centre controls

7. engage auto hover
