In 4K I can sometimes watch an AGM-65 fly all the way to its target. Or see large bombs like a CBU fall. Never used the mod. As mentioned not necessary in VR. Flying warbirds seeing enemies from afar is easy. Seeing them once the dot goes over to actual model becomes very hard. And ID spotting is also very hard even at quite close range. Generally the wings of the Sptifire gives it away. (Tho probably far closer than in real life) whole the two Fw190s, the 109, and the two PS can be very hard to tell appart even at very close range. i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 5090 OC, 128Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.

In 4K obviously identifying other aircraft is very easy. DCS honestly seems quite beautiful in that regard. And spotting in 4K seems believable. I think the solution may be to make 1080p like 4K rather than the other way around. Although the chief problem with the current dots is their visibility at great distance which the mod supposedly corrects. Sometimes I think the “problem” isn’t so much the game as players expectations and again those being influenced by other games and icons. WWII air combat means, getting lost, not seeing the enemy, hearing confusing radio calls about bandits everywhere, fog of war etc. You’re lucky to return alive with a single kill or at all. Straining to look around an empty sky and suddenly a bandit flashes by out of nowhere. Or the excitement of suddenly seeing this fleeing speck. That’s a sim. The moment you make the enemy too visible all the reality of air combat is lost. You can’t compare a combat flight sim like this to other action games that try to keep up a pace for you. Real WWII missions might involve flying long distances to a target you don’t see and then fail to hit and then you fly all the way back home. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5

There is another ww2 sim(no not that one) that is in closed vr beta and plane ID is super easy in VR the yellow noses are visible from a far bigger distance than in DCS. The only planes I have problems seeing the difference between is the Gladiator and the Italian CR 42 i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 5090 OC, 128Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.
SharpeXB Posted May 21, 2023 Posted May 21, 2023 I think the spotting “problem” in WWII has as much to do with gameplay modes as anything else. Look at the options in DCS: Scripted Campaigns. Playing these on full real without labels it’s quite likely you’ll not be able to follow a script the way you can in the modern era simply because you lack easy waypoints to follow and sensors etc. Modern can create an authentic “game” for you in a way. So players I’m sure feel frustrated trying to do this at an authentic level of difficulty. The reality would be just as frustrating, clearly real pilots had more training though at navigation etc. Multiplayer. In any sim (honestly I haven’t played WWII in DCS) players are just flying around lone wolf trying to find targets by eye. This never happened in reality. Aircraft always flew in groups and formations and those are much easier to spot. Given that the detection range is only 3-4 miles and the size of the map and the low number of players, most times they’ll never see each other at all. GCI would certainly be authentic for Europe 1944 maybe servers use that. In Modern most times nobody seems willing to take that role though. The best gameplay mode would be a dynamic campaign which would feature both realistic numbers and formations, thus making spotting easier and flexible objectives which are more realistic and playable. i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5
