Glowingheat Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Now I don't know if this is a bug for just the Viggen, but if I launch a pair of RB-15s - if I get shot down and die, both missiles get destroyed instantly too - this isn't very realistic, in real life they would carry on to the target - at least thats my understanding of fire and forget. I could swear that I've seen an F-18 drop Harpoons that carried on to their target after the aircraft got shot down. There's a good chance I'm wrong on that, but thought I'd mention it, in case there's anything that can be done. 2
Zabuzard Posted June 8, 2023 Posted June 8, 2023 Is this reproducible or just happened to you once in a blue moon?Sounds like something we should have a look at. Thanks for the feedback. If possible, it would be helpful if you can provide a short track file were you reproduce it maybe in singleplayer quickly, or similar :)

It has been brought up over and over again. Latest statement from Heatblur is, it's a technical limitation. 1

Makes sense. The problem is that the missiles have a lot of very unique features (target selection, hopping, sea skimming, ...) and the only way for us to implement and provide them, at that time and afaik still the case today, is by guiding them ourselves in the code. Instead of using EDs provided fire-and-forget guidance model. And guiding it ourselves doesn't work anymore with the aircraft being gone, unfortunately. So either this or that, while waiting for new possibilities being added to the engine. Interesting side note. For the BK-90 we later switched from custom guidance to that fire-and-forget model. So those still keep flying. But therefore, they lost the ability to fly at custom altitudes. 1

Makes sense, but perhaps if it's possible to check that ED haven't changed the way that works in case some progress could be made since it's a bit frustrating to launch some missiles then get jumped by SU-30s and killed and your missiles get killed too! 2
