Watch EKRAN?

In any aviation environment, reviewing a system is known as a Check, i.e. Checklist, Flight Control Check,etc... its part of the aviation dialogue

 

To watch something as defined in Webster's Dictionary:

a: to be attentive or vigilant

 

Whereas to Check something is according to Webster's : standard for testing and evaluation

 

With EKRAN, arent we evaluating the alert just generated and not a prolonged attentiveness to it ( makes it seem like a much longer evaluation )

 

That is the main difference between the words "check" and "watch" and a very good point. I wonder if there are instances where a prolonged watching of the EKRAN is a good idea.

 

Overall I think we get too carried away with what is best versus what is the most real. If there are words in Russian for watch/monitor and check/evaluate and if Kamov decided to put in the wrong word then ED should not correct Kamov, only simulate reality, flaws and all.

"Смотри" [smotri] is correct (and short) word in Russian for using in this announcement. And why you guys don't ask translate EKRAN to SCREEN, "Shkval" to "Squall" etc?

 

But I agree if literal translation confused some users it must be corrected.

I think the first time you play the game it should be in all English except for one word that is still in Russian, randomly selected and defined in all loading screens so you can learn it. After a few times you can press a "Got it!" button and it makes two Russian words be untranslated. In a couple months you're flying in Russian! :P

Apples and oranges, Namenlos ein. You don't translate the term "Hellfire" into your language, but I STRONLGY doubt you use the words "FIRE" or "LAUNCH" when speaking of deploying an US weapon, while you use your own language to describe that action for Russian weapons. And AFAIK "check" is no NATO-system. And why was the fixed HUD-Groundmode not called "100"? Neither in LockOn, nor in BS.

I think literal translation is just cheaper for developers then hiring good translators and correctors/editors.

Are you referring to GRID mode? "Сетка" - grid, "Сотка" - 100.

What a bone argument. Nobody can possibly be right!

 

There's no such thing as a 'literal' translation, unless it is a noun.

 

 

Translated literally (using a dictionary) it should most likely be 'watch'.

Translated [to a single word] to keep the meaning as similar as possible, it should most likely be 'check'.

 

To say it's 'more realistic' to use 'watch' is just silly, neither one is more realistic than the other.

I think "watch" is bad word as it is suitable more for describing looking at something regularly or protractedly. Probably "Check EKRAN" is good candidate, because "Look at EKRAN" is too long.

Heck just the word "EKRAN" would be sufficient without Watch or Check :p
