My g2 is started to get to the point of needing replacement and I'm considering a pico 4.

I'm using an all amd setup with 6900xt and 5800x3d cpu. Works great with g2 but from what I've read the pico 4 may be a different matter.

Anyone with any real experience with a similar setup that can help point me in the right direction?

I have never used the Pico 4. But I had 6900XT like yourself and bit the bullet and got QP. It's agnostic to AMD and I had fair improvement in performance compared to G2

Quad Layer Dynamic Fov Rendering is supported on AMD as of today as well. The picture is miles ahead of the G2, and the sharpness is close except there is no wasted periphery pixels as it's sharp across the entire field of view

Dare I say it, you will be able to get 72hz/72FPS parity and have a picture that is much better than before without the spyware the is Bytedance and CCP

If you don't like the QP you can send it back no questions within 30 days

The quest pro does look very nice but it's a bit more than i was wanting to spend right now, hence the interest in pico 4. I'm in no big rush and may just have to wait and see what else develops.

is ASW working with AMD cards now?

I tried a 6900xt last year and reprojection was not working with AMD cards back then.

It does work. But I don't like it. I don't like it on Nvidia cards either though so take that for what it is - the whole point of DFR and low resolution (that looks better) is that with a 6900XT you can run it at 72FPS/72HZ giving you the best ASW in the world. You can have "2 Frame frame-hold" reprojection (aka 1/2 refresh rate frame rate) if you want to crank the settings higher, the ghosting was there but better than with WMR

I Just got the quest pro but didn't try it too much (didn't install the new mbucchia's magic yet) and with a 3090 I surely can't keep 72fps.
Probably the 6900xt is better in rasterization then the 3090

3090 would be slightly stronger than 6900XT in higher resolution render and slightly weaker in lower resolution render (With the median around 1440p)

You will be up for a treat. I'm just going to leave this, *checks notes * 46% reduction in render resolution with a better image quality here. Your GPU load will basically half. Or an other way of putting it, congrats on your new 4090

My Pico 4 struggles with my current setup in VR (5600x; rx6700). Using virtual desktop I can get frame rates of 45 (set at 90hz with SSW) set at medium (headset boosted to Ultra). This gives me a resolution that's OK for me but it struggles a bit with fast head turns; a slight black bar at the edge of vision. Set to Low the frame rate is great and it is very smooth, but resolution is not great. With your setup I think you should be able to get acceptable performance: high possibly ultra on VD and good frame rate. With DCS I have reverted back to rift s until I upgrade my system.

I get good performance in IL-2; high settings, 72 FPS with no SSW.

Thanks for the replies. Food for thought. Right now I'm really pleased with the vr experience with my 6900xt and g2. I've overclocked to a little over 2600mhz and have no problem maintaining 47 fps smooth (chill on in adrenaline) low level in f18 over sinai with mostly maxed settings on dcs.

I may wait and see what happens with quest 3 in October before going for the pico 4. However sometimes my impatience gets the better of me and may crack before 😂

I have a 6950XT but I run it undervolted *and* underclocked (not the memory) to 6900XT level because I like my PC's to be as close to silent as possible. Pico 4 is quite usable with Virtual Desktop "high" to "ultra" settings (not "godlike") and ~medium settings in DCS. This is with VD's retroprojection at 45/90 FPS so you might have a bit of ghosting when a bandit is at your 3 or 9 o'clock. I wouldn't use a PICO 4 for DCS (or MSFS) with less than a 6900XT, though, and I fly single (no multiplayer). CPU is a 5800x3d @ 114/75/115 PPT/TDC/EDC (also to limit fan rpm).

A G2 should provides a bit more performance as it can skip the encoding to h.264 (h.265 doesn't work well on AMD with VD at this time) but it comes with a much narrower sweet spot. The Pico's pancake lenses provide clarity across practically your entire FOV. Factor in the cost of VD (19.99, sometimes 14.99 on sale) and a basic ac or ax dedicated router (45.00 - 120.00) to be installed close to your PC (which can open another can of worms depending on your existing network setup). Check VD's discord for a list of recommended routers. Depending on the shape of your face, you might also want an aftermarket facial interface for better comfort, that would be another 25.00. Setting everything to your liking can also take up some time.

In your position, if I couldn't trial the Pico from a seller with a good return policy I would probably wait for the G2 to die and see what will be available at that time (the worse that could happen is a fall/autumn sale on Pico 4). I am happy with my Pico and my setup, there is no turning back to my 2D ultrawide monitor and head tracker and I cannot see a wired headset in my future after experiencing the freedom of wireless, but sometimes I wish I had a 4090 to use the Pico 4 closer to its full potential in DCS.

I recently purchased a pico 4 and and throughly tested it with a 6800xt.  Unfortunately I had to send it back as in my opinion the visuals were no where near as good as my reverb G1.  Loads of reviews say how good it is but I tried everything possible and couldn't get it looking good.  By all means buy one but make sure you have good returns policy.  It was a real shame for me as its got some very nice features and I really wanted it to be good.

Getting a G2 as soon as they are back in stock in the UK.
