Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? F/A-18c when I designate a target visually using the HMD the designation point does not transfer accurately over to the DDI. It's off by 100's of meters only at ~ 2k target range.

I've run into this with hot starts, so no helmet alignment.  Haven't lost much sleep over it because it is, as they say, close enough for government work and I had any interest in reporting bugs here beat out of me years ago.

I can set up a track for this easily enough and test it against a freshly aligned HMD.

No I did not do an alignment(hot start yes). I am not seeing this issue with the lightning pod under the exact same mission. Its pretty crappy if you want a quick helmet tag a target then fine tune the shot and the damn target is nowhere to be found when you look at the DDI (when zoomed in pretty much useless). Does anyone else even use this ATFLIR anymore? I kinda  have a weird love for the symbology.

Ya I guess one must do alignment even on hot start as this does rectify the problem, just a pain. I haven't tried it on an airborne start. Feels weird to alignments in the air, a bit counterintuitive.

I use it out of pure stubbornness.

It does seen the lightning is a better product overall, and maybe I should switch back.  Far as I know the hornet is the only machine that uses ATFLIR and that would make it a RHSC in the time dominated world of development white boards.  Besides, on those rare occasions when I drive to the seedy part of the airbase, desperately hoping nobody I know is watching, to engage in a sordid liaison with an F-16...

Lol, yep it does seem to have a very good 'low light' camera, for those intimate encounters; that cute little f-16 on taxi Bravo 😆
