MTFDarkEagle Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 (edited) Hi guys, I was using a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ on a stock clock with the download version of BS. I recently got a new CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 7750+ BE still on a stock clock for now (stock cooler :P). I uninstalled the download installs, so I'm waiting for the DVD version. But here's my question: Is there a jump in FPS? (yes using affinity ;)) My current system is in my signature. I'm using Vista32 Thanks MTFDarkEagle Edited March 14, 2009 by MTFDarkEagle Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
ZaltysZ Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 When I tried, I noticed 10 fps jump using affinity trick with Athlon64 X2 6000+. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.

When using my 4000+ I got a improvement of about 10-15 fps. But that's not quite what I'm asking. Is there a big FPS increase between the different CPU's using the affinity trick? 192nd_Erdem Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I think Core2Duo's get much more performance out of affinity trick. I get 15-20FPS more with my modest laptop system.

I dont quite remember how much the improvement is with the affinity, when i've got the DVD version I'll repost it :) But still I dont really have a answer to my question... nemises Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 There should allways be a jump in performance when moving to a faster CPU , and also if you are running Vista, you should also see a performance boost on top of that by using the affinity trick ....is that what you are asking??

Thanks! at least for a very large part! do you think you can estimate how many FPS increasement I'm going to get? Or is that not easy to say:joystick: Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Coolhnd1 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I would expect that the increase will likely be directly related to the relative clock frequency difference of the CPUs since it looks like your staying in the same CPU Processor family. I don't know what the difference in clock frequencies for the AMD X2 CPUs are that you mention but for instance if the 4000+ runs at 2 Ghz and the 7750+ runs at 3Ghz I'd expect a jump approximately of 50%. This would just be a rule of thumb however since other things like cache size can also make a significant differance. -- CoolHand
EtherealN Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Also, do remember that you could run into a memory bottleneck if you get to a level where the processor needs to talk a lot to the RAM but the RAM is slow. When I clocked my E8500 from 3.16GHz to 4GHz I went from some 6600 CPU score in 3Dmark Vantage to 7800ish. When I then clocked my 800MHz PC2-6400 ramsticks up to 1092MHz it rose further to the 8300 range. (Add some salt on the numbers, I'm currently in a pub with a proper stout and I have the notes from my clock sessions at home.) Whether there will be a bottleneck like that with DCS is difficult to say, but at some point there will be diminishing returns. To get a semi-fair estimate I'd say FPSincrease = two thirds percentile clock difference. that should roughly take other parts of the system into consideration when you judge whether it's worth the effort. Lav69 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Is the DVD version supposed to perform better than the D/L version? That's the impression I'm getting from this thread. And wouldn't that be pure speculation considering the DVD version isn't even out?
EtherealN Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Huh? Performance wise download and DVD are identical and we have not discussed anything like performance differences between them. They are different distribution methods, that's it. And the German and Russian DVD versions are out. They are countries outside of the US. ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
Lav69 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Really? And all this time I thought Germany and Russia were small towns in Southern Alabama. I dont quite remember how much the improvement is with the affinity, when i've got the DVD version I'll repost it :) But still I dont really have a answer to my question... This could lead someone to believe that someone feels the DVD version is some how better.
Lav69 Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Of course I am under the assumption that all these peeps have actually played the game before they make these posts about could've, should've and should I. Of course I could be completely wrong.
EtherealN Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 " uninstalled the download installs, so I'm waiting for the DVD version." He doesn't want to bother re-downloading. 192nd_Erdem Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 It's absolutely same as the download version, so it isn't supposed to perform better.

Zakk Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 You should have gotten an Intel, and no you are not going to see an FPS increase--it's pretty much like crysis; wait another year for more advanced hardware to gain an advantage Gigabyte|Q6600|8GB DDR3|GTX285|Win7 64|X-65
