Parts for the Ka-50 have got to be rediculously expensive, as there isn't a regular production run for them.

Are you sure about this? Many aircraft cease to be produced, but parts for them are still manufactured as long as there is a demand. I am sure (without knowing for a fact, however) that parts are still available for the Ka-50. That being said, most of the parts are not unique to the Ka-50. The engines, APU, hydraulic pumps, electric generators, and countless other parts are all used on other aircraft as well. The parts that are unique the the Ka-50 are primarily avionics related, although the mina gearbox is another big one. However, both of those items are most certainly still being produced as required, as many parts have lifetime limits for overhaul.

Well, in Afghanistan you're mainly engaging irregulars, which means you are more likely to have a use for the autocannon and rockets than anti-tank action, which would naturally diminish the requirement for the Longbow radar.

It can be however good it wants to be, but it's made to search for and lock on tanks and such vehicles, not guerilla doodz with RPG's running around.

Off topic, but this would make for an INCREDIBLE mission. Searching for insurgent ground troops hiding in the mountains. That could be wound a long way, with a great story line, and maybe even a mini-campaign.

Wish I knew how to make missions! :joystick:

Well, some missions in the Deployment campaign aren't too far away from that. :P

I found it really intereting to read (and perhaps the Apache drivers on this forum can confirm?) , that , at least in Afghanistan, and as relates to the british Apache Mk1 drivers , they have the mighty Longbow radar, but do not even use it , or need to use it, and do everything by laser designation and mk1 eyeball.

Having recently read "Ed Macy"'s "Apache", they do *use* it, just not for targetting/firing - he claims it's a great advantage in terms of situational awareness (and with no real drawbacks due to the lack of integrated air defence). If it were no use at all, they would delete it as have the US Army, allowing them to carry more weapons.

Another reason the US Apaches don't have radars in Afghanistan is that much of the country at high elevations where weight becomes an issue. The British Apaches have more powerful engines which makes it more feasable to carry around the radar.

That said, it doesn't appear they ever carry a full weapons load. E.g. the cannon usually carries just 300 rounds, compared to the 1200 round capacity, and often just two or four hellfires.

Actually US 64D's also have similar engine upgrades.

US Apaches are being upgraded to the T700-GE-701D (which gives it 2000 shp compared to 1890 shp on the previous T700), but it's still not as powerful as the Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 engines in the WAH-64s (which has 2100 shp in the version used in current WAH-64s).
