DimSim Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Just finished Stone Sky's MAD campaign flying the Gazelle and it was a blast, both the campaign and the new flight model. I had trialed the Gazelle some years ago but stuck with the Huey. I'd now recommend this whirly bird to chopper lovers. With the new v2.9 grass shadows, flying low has never looked so good. And that 20mm cannon strapped to the side, nice! Just wanted to thank the devs for their efforts on the Gazelle and look forward to seeing the module advance. 7

I can only agree with that. It's great that you keep modernizing and upgrading the Gazelle. There are: The NVG for the L version The complete restructuring of the VR body (I love how Co-Pilot holds on when things get rough). The merging of the Mistral and the L. New Gunpods and new missile types The new FM (yeah) and of course more. Great that you guys are sticking with it. Multiplayer was always a bit buggy before, but it seems to work better now. I still hope for a better rotor animation. But that's probably coming too. One mini-issue is still, if in the main menu is checked: Show VR body, then you have to press Shift P every time you restart DCS. Bashibazouk Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 How are you dealing with the skids? For example, in MAD mission 9, I have to be ridiculously careful to face into the wind (not the direction as specified over the radio, BTW, it's more 360-000 rather than 270-80 or whatever is said). I can fly all the other choppers well enough and the Gazelle is great once in the air. But taking off or landing, it's like the skids are glued to the ground and rip loose. Unfortunately for me, if the wind is even 1 degree off at 5 m/s one skid will rip loose before the other, causing the heli to roll suddenly, lurching to try to tip over. I can catch this most of the time but it doesn't seem right. I've tried yanking the collective (yes, I know that's not recommended) or doing it as slowly as I can but it seems to be a characteristic of the friction between the chopper and the ground. Anyone else notice this? If not, what am I doing wrong? I don't have a great HOTAS but I've adjusted it fairly well, I believe. If this happened on all the helis, I might just assume I'm totally crap at taking off or landing but it's only the Gazelle. In flight, it's a dream. It's just taking off or landing, when the ground friction with the skids seems weird. 2

I haven't noticed the 'glued to ground' effect, perhaps it's a new issue in recent weeks while I've been flying another aircraft? I have on occasion in all choppers had my skids stuck to terrain or some object, such as roof top or FARP pad, but that seems like an intermittent and general issue. However I did find it very sensitive to wind, and if not facing into the wind, easy to tip over, or make a very ugly initial ascent. Edited January 10, 2024 by DimSim 1
RealDCSpilot Posted January 10, 2024 Posted January 10, 2024 @Bashibazouk To rule out that the problem might come from a different angle, can you please provide some screenshots from the beginning of that mission? Maybe it's a terrain physics problem and the skids are stuck into the ground. Please take a closer look from the outside and provide some screenhots. And one screenshot with the loadout from the ground crew menu please. i9 13900K @5.5GHz, Z790 Gigabyte Aorus Master, RTX4090 Waterforce, 64 GB DDR5 @5600, PSVR2, Pico 4 Ultra, HOTAS & Rudder: all Virpil with Rhino FFB base made by VPforce, DCS: all modules
BalticDude Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 I recently bought the Gazelle because of the fixes to the FM and now it's my favorite BLUFOR helicopter. I fly it all the time now. Even in PvP server I got a kill against a Ka-50 with the HOT-3! 4
Marshallman Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 This is probably aimed at anyone with flight setup problems, Newbies etc. Hope it can help. Ive spent a lot of time recently with this machine along with @swartbyron and its so sweet. First thing I noticed is the Autopilot, I have mapped it and usually leave it off, only bringing it in for weapons delivery to utilise the Hover. It resolves a snap like effect of the heli, which may also be the "glued effect" on the ground? Second thing is 50% fuel transorms it, but its still very capable with a full fuel and weapons. Third thing, Trim reset.....I find it invaluable when transitioning into Landing turns and it very quickly becomes natural to reset trim when you have achieved new flight position (mapped to tms aft switch on stick). Also holding the trim in when transitioning does the same thing, I had NO idea you could do this...... but on my joystick it does loose connection occasionally. Settings are based on my setup I have a Virpil collective with Alpha LH grip and a Warthog Joystick with a 200mm swan neck extension. Crosswind Yaw/rudder Pedals These all relate to right hand sliders Deadzone, Saturation X, Saturation Y, Curvature of all your axes Roll 0 - 50 - 100 - 10 Pitch 0 - 50 - 100 - 10 Yaw 0 - 100 - 100 - minus10 Collective 0 - 50 - 100 - minus 20 (invert - this maybe just a Virpil requirement) Special settings Cyclic trim type instant, Pedal trim type None If its still too twitchy, then try deadzones on Roll and pitch of 4 each. You may be right in the terrain physics thing as I understand the terrains have been updated since then.
