DCS by Eagle Dynamics Discord Phone number Harvesting or Scam or Some sort of Scheme?

Can any one explain why out of the blue the DCS' discord channel is trying to; what I can only describe as harvesting... why is it that they are harvesting or attempting harvest our phone numbers??? Are they selling our information to information brokers??? What is going on here?

I have been on this forum or some form of SSI / EDyna forum for over 20 years... I got found out about the discord thing about 2  to 4 years ago maybe and never ever once on any discord forum I have been joined to or discord itself for that matter, did I have to render my phone number to use this service!

Is this a scam?? Is this some new policy?? It has a real creep vibe I can tell you that much.  I have never run a foul of the mods or been banned.

Just could not chat one day and got the message below.

Thanks for any insight into this matter.

My mission is to fly, fight, and win. o-:|:-o What I do is sometimes get a tin of soup, heat it up, poach an egg in it, serve that with a pork pie sausage roll.

Are you sure there is no other options like confirm via fb or google?
I do not like Discord. I find it a mess so I am not informed

But you should not have to reveal your phone number

"Confirming your identity" on the internet is BS, anyway, unless you're going to pretend you're a public figure. For a regular account? Forget it. If they try to force me, I either feed it crap or bypass the verification, and that's only if I really can't simply not use the website in question.

Yeah I can't chat on the discord server hosted for DCS. Giving it my home number is a no go. I am sure as soon as you give out personal information like that it gets misused and opens you up to exploits

If you do a search of your windows files, ED have placed files there that  are not in the saved games location,

or part of the registry.

Or in the main sim folders.

Look in AppData

Most apps do place files there.

May mean nothing.

But in the interest of full dis closer.

They have never, in my memory,

explained what these are for.

"Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."

I only have a DCS folder in AppData, no files. In general, these exist because Windows tends to install things in Program Files by default, but modifying anything in Program Files has been restricted since Vista. What's probably happening is that DCS detects when it's in Program Files and puts files in AppData that it needs to be able to modify without Windows interfering. Normally they'd be in the main folder (and that's probably where they are on my machine), but AppData is the designated place for programs to put such things. Except for savegames, which are supposed to go into Saved Games, but not every game uses it, some also stick the saves in AppData.

Notably, this change screwed up backwards compatibility with some older programs, which predate the restriction and didn't handle it. I got into habit of not installing things into Program Files for this reason.
