Is this idea good, needs refinement, or just bad?

    • I love it! But the map is probably too big

    • I don't think it's worth developing over other map ideas / locations

I have been thinking about map ideas lately and where on this Earth would be the ideal place to host some of the upcoming and existing modules. And I feel that although my proposal would result in a very huge map, perhaps infeasibly large, I do think it is a great initial point of reference and I'm sure developers could make it work with some community input to refine the idea.

As the title says, I am proposing an area starting from the Air Force base Butterworth in Malaysia. It was initially developed in 1921 and expanded by the Royal Airforce in 1941 in order play a role in the defence of the Malayan Peninsula from the Japanese. In 1957 it was handed over to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and has had a permeant posting of Australian Defence Force (ADF) since; this is part of the the Five Power Defence Arrangements. In 1970  Butterworth was handed over to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) while still having a posting of two RAAF squadrons to assist in air defence up until 1988.

Currently RMAF base Butterworth see's full use by the RMAF which hosts its Hornets and training out of it, which includes some scraped F5s (presumably for parts), some other training jets (Hawks), and sees the Malaysian Flankers fly in and out along with many foreign jets. It also has a continued and unbroken posting of ADF in the form of No.19 SQN, No.92 WG Det A, 2nd/30th Training Group (Rifle Company Butterworth (Army)), JHC, and Australian Defence Force Investigative Service. Just in this base and broad location alone there is a significant amount of history stretching over a time period from before WWII up until this very moment.

Everything north is well known history to everyone here. Having this general area as a map in DCS would enable valid and historical scenarios from WWII through the cold war and up until this very moment. As mentioned, the map in its current proposition may be too large, as an alternative down sizing (which would still be huge) I would suggest reducing the height of the map to the former North/South Vietnam boarder at the 17th parallel; perhaps making the terrain detailing reduced over Thailand with a specific focus on Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and the RMAF base Butterworth.

Instant purchase from me. I did suggest to CheckSix the Aussie Mirage IIID and IIIO, but, they seem to hate conversations about suggestions and ideas. I do think that having both in the same module would be a huge success, more so if DCS is expanding in the Cold War period (which it is) and if there are more Asian maps to come out.

This might appear that we are going off topic but I don't think so. This line of conversation, and any other that people want to start, reinforces the validity of this area of the world as a DCS map.

If I'm not mistaken, Razbam did once showcase the 3D model of a Mirage IIIJ or something a few years ago. So it might already be in the works with them
