Hi,

I only flew M2000 so far (and choppers/WW2), so I'm used to the 2 "chevrons" going up or down, when I'm accelerating/decelerating.

I just started the F18 but I don't see any indication helping me regarding speed change ? I'm thinking, in case of AA refuelling, that would be much more difficult ?

Thanks !

The Hornet (along with most U.S. fighters) doesn't have acceleration cues in the aircraft.

IRL, tankers have recommended airspeeds based on the aircraft they intend to refuel, and the receiving aircraft generally follow specific closure rates based on that airspeed. In the case of the Hornet, the recommended closure rate is 2 knots above the tanker's airspeed (for the KC-135, the recommended airspeed range for refueling Hornets is 200 to 275 knots).

I also find those acceleration chevrons extremely useful and it makes me wonder why the concept didn't spread like a virus to the rest of the western jets in the 70's and 80's. But that's reality and can't be done anything about it.

I agree, really useful on the Mirage, however in a real aircraft you can feel acceleration changes, so maybe that's why they were never added. The speed tape on the HUD can also be used to gauge acceleration in US fighters that have them.

When it comes to AA fueling specifically, I make a note of the fuel flow needed to keep up with the tanker and use it as a reference, though in the Hornet the EGT reading may be a little more precise.

Well…even though we (NATO countries) are all „friends“ and such…there is still competition amongst companies and one can not simply steal a „cool idea“ from another companies HUD layout.
Or they might not even have had access to the particular HUD features of Dassault jets.
