In DCS, when an aircraft launches a missile at you in single target track STT mode, your RWR will give you a missile launch warning. But in reality, is this how it would actually work? Even in STT mode, the actual radar emissions of the launch aircraft in 4th gen fighters won't change, or is that wrong?

Is this realistic, or is it done for gameplay mechanics purposes?

In real life, all you get is the STT lock warning for the SARH missile or the Active missile warning for the ARH - no actual Launch warning. So, strictly technically speaking, any time you get an STT lock warning, you must assume the missile can be on the way and act accordingly.
