Some of the F-14 D's were F-14A's rebuilt and were designated F-14D(R). So it can be a little difficult to establish clarity between the various versions of the Tomcat. That all said, if I was talking to someone playing DCS and they said they were learning to fly the A Cat, it would be easy enough to discern what they were flying.
