What exactly is going on here.

Bandit closing. Jester has had him locked up locked up a long while. Just as the ring is about to expand. It expands for a fraction of a second and then collapses again.

What is going on when that happens.

i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 5090 OC, 128Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.

What kind of range are you talking?

At longer range the bandit could be beaming you, which I think I have seen the AI do.  That will, if you maintain lock, make your Rmax suddenly drop due to the loss of closure and your ASE will collapse.

At shorter range it's possible he has gotten inside of Rmin but I think you should also be getting the Break X if that happens?

Its bugged for sure, its why you barely see any tutorials on aim7 missiles or the radar lock in general.

I'm getting good locks and good kills, although Jester can and will get bad locks and report them as a good lock, as well as his general inability to find targets past 10 miles or so.

Eta:

Sometimes Jester reports a contact along the correct bearing, at the right range, but apparently the wrong altitude.  Like a contact at 10,000 when I know the bad guy is at 15,000.

Sometimes he will lock, and report a good lock, but I'll see a signal on the scope with lots of noise and an ASE dot that swings quickly from side to side.  Actually now that I think about it, it seems to move at about the scan speed of the radar in search...Which would make me think it's related except for being in STT so the system shouldn't be swinging the dish...

The altitude is a pure guesstimate on Jesters side based on the own altitude and the antenna angle. It is roughly correct within +-5k ft. We have yet to adjust the callouts to sound less specific and confident 😄

Okay that explains part of it!  I assumed he'd be making some errors somewhere but didn't realize how far off he could be.

 

Any idea about the strange locked target behavior?

Jester locked a sidelobe or clutter. Ultimately, it is his responsibility to detect this and re-attempt the lock. Right now, he is not really good at that yet though (he checks some parameters, but not nearly enough yet).

If you spot a bad lock, use context action long (unlock but keep focused) and then again context action long (lock). Hopefully he will get a better lock then.

To reduce the likeness of this, make sure to not engage in a look-down attitude and make sure to not maneuver hard when locking but flying roughly stable (else Jester cant guesstimate leading the target with the cursor properly).

That's pretty much what I've been doing.  It's a rare thing. 

I would have guessed side lobe due to the sweeping but seemed odd to see that with the radar "locked".

Anyway...F-14B Upgrade with Sparrowhawk HUD...$10.99 add on module coming soon please after Phantom is done?  Lol.
