4romeodelta Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 (edited) I am considering a GPU upgrade to the RTX 4080 Super. Does anyone have any experiences (good or bad) with these GPUs in VR? I am looking at the MSI Gaming RTX 4080 Super 16G for about a grand. Thanks for the tips! Edited June 26, 2024 by 4romeodelta
The_Nephilim Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Well which CPU do you have? I just purchased a 4070ti and was able to get about 60+ FPS @ 65% Rez in DCS, so I would say you should fair a bit better with the 4080Super.. but what I know now I would have gotten a 4080super.. Even better yet if you can swing a 4090, that should be really nice for VR.. I am going to wait until the 5xxx series gets here and make a decision I am still thinking I should send the 4070ti back.. Intel Ultra 265K 5.5GHZ / Gigabyte Z890 Aorus Elite / MSI 4070Ti Ventus 12GB / SoundBlaster Z SoundCard / Corsair Vengance 64GB Ram / HP Reverb G2 / Samsung 980 Pro 2TB Games / Crucial 512GB M.2 Win 11 Pro 21H2 / ButtKicker Gamer / CoolerMaster TD500 Mesh V2 PC Case
WipeUout Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Had a 4080 and was getting good results but went to a 4090 and gained about 10-15% more. It all depends on your HMD. I use a Pimax 8kX which has a lot of pixels (4kx2=16.5 MPixels) to render and even with the 4090 I can't get to the maximum possible quality my HMD can provide. If your HMD has less resolution, the 4080 will give you a very good experience at high refresh rate. Your CPU may also be important in the equation, it could be the bottleneck in some scenarios. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9800X3D, RTX 4090, 96GB DDR 5, MSI Tomahawk 870E, Crucial 2TB x 2, TM WARTHOG COMBO + PENDULAR RUDDER PEDALS, THE AMAZING PIMAX 8K X, Sony 5.1 Spks+SubW | DCS, A-10C_II, AH-64D, F-14/15E/16/18, F-86F, AV-8B, M-2000C, SA342, Huey, Spitfire, FC3.
Aapje Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 @4romeodelta You can also consider waiting for the new gen, where you should get more performance for the same money. It should come late this year or very early next year. 1
Glide Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 Get the most VRAM you can afford in the Nvidia platform, and you will be future proof. My 3080Ti still rocks, but the 12GB vram limit bugs me every so often. 1
4romeodelta Posted July 2, 2024 Author Posted July 2, 2024 Thanks for the tips, everyone. I have a 3070 and get about 45 fps in VR with the Q3 headset right now, but my graphics settings are low-mid range. I think waiting until RTX 5XXX come out and then getting the 4090 at a better price is the way I will go.... 1

It depends on the headset you intend to use. If you have DFR you don't need anything really powerful. I run a Quest Pro with a 4070 at 72 FPS in most situations. A headset with no DFR, such as a Quest 3 will be more demanding and a 4080 would be better. 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).

Toro Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 I've got a second hand 3090 paired to a Quest Pro and it seems to me it is the best bang for buck. I'm extremely happy with it, specially with DFR. Even a second hand 4080 is slightly more expensive and has less VRAM (16gb) though should be sufficient on most occasions. Might work better with DLSS than the 3090. If you only consider buying new, 4080 is the minimum I'd go for. I used to play on a 3060ti and yes, it would work at lower fps (~45fps) but i get so much IQ now with the 3090 and at 72fps that i would find it hard to go back.
