How do I get rid of the large circle around the outside of the HUD symbology? See the screenshot below for an example. Can't find any reference to this view in the manual.

The circle you speak of is the Allowable Steering Error Circle for the AIM-120, and it will be displayed any time you have your AIM-120's selected. Check pages 330-331 in the manual for more information and pictures. Here's a quote:

"Allowable Steering Error Circle (ASEC). Indicates the zone in which the Attack Steering Cue (ASC) should be located prior to launch to hit the target with a high probability kill (PK). The ASC is displayed after radar lock. The ASEC shows the maximum angular steering error probability. In other words, the circle increases in size when the distance to the target intercept point decreases, which means that as the distance decreases, the missile can be launched with greater steering error."

-Col. Russ Everts opinion on surface-to-air missiles: "It makes you feel a little better if it's coming for one of your buddies. However, if it's coming for you, it doesn't make you feel too good, but it does rearrange your priorities."

That is medium ranged missile AA mode, you need to go back to Nav mode.

To do that press the AA button on the ICP just below the HUD, or if you used DGFT Switch then DOGFIGHT Missile Override Switch - MISSILE/OVERRIDE CENTER,

or DOGFIGHT Missile Override Switch - CENTER

If I'm not mistaken, the aircraft must also be armed, either for combat or SIM. If you don't see the ASEC after locking a target, cross-check that you're armed, if it's your intent to fire the missile.

The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
