correct as-is Does not release flares

Good morning,

I set my F-18C's ECM to automatic mode and realised that it releases chaffs automatically but doesn't release flares. For example, when a Su-27 fires an R-73 at me, shouldn't the flares be released automatically?

R-73 is a IR guided missile, so Hornet has no idea it has been launched at you. Hornet does not have MWS (Missile Warning System) which could detect missile launch in your vicinity. RWR can detect radar emissions, but as R-73 is a Fox2 it will not be detected.

Not neccesarily. The CMDS has multiple separate programs that have differant parameters. You need to select a program that dispenses both chaff and flares. 

Alternatively you can hit the bypass switch below the RWR panel to diable the ALE-47 and then your CMDS hat will dispense either one manually.
