warmachine79 Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Hey guys, is there a way to modify the highest possible bitrate for AV1 in Virtual Desktop when using the VDXR runtime on the Quest 3? I have a stable 2.400 mbps connection (ASUS Rapture GT6, PC connected via Etherent, headset in a distance of 1,5m with direct los), latencies are great, but it only gives me have bitrate of 200 Mbit. This seems to be the maximum. I cannot remember where I read it, but I think there was some manual tweaking I can do to get to 500? I want to try to increase it to the point where latencies become impaired.
slughead Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Have you asked on the Virtual Desktop discord server? That's where their support team operate. Slugmouse: a finger-mounted mouse button emulator for hand-tracked VR cockpit clicking. Available now! Slugmouse Demonstration Video

I didn't ask but someone had on the same day I was looking and while everyone else's question were being answered his was ignored, twice. So I didn't want to ask myself. I think the WiFi connection speed is not the same as data transfer speed when including the codec processing. I also have 2,400 mbps and think 200mbps on the AV1 codec is pretty low. I know the app sets the actual speed when first starting and there is a setting in the streamer app to auto adjust the bit rate. You might try the Discord, I searched and found nothing but the unanswered question I mentioned above. slughead Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 I don't have an answer for changing the VD bitrate beyond what the configuration allows. However, it's worth noting that the AV1 codec is far more efficient and doesn't need a high bitrate. It has a 46% to 50% higher compression rate than x264, meaning it can do the same with fewer bits. The setup options often discussed on VD discord are: 1) Make sure you use a dedicated router with a dedicated channel. 2) Check your local WiFi signals to make sure none of your neighbours are using the same channel. 3) If you can't find a good clean channel then try building a makeshift Faraday cage with a cardboard box and aluminium foil. It just needs to protect your router antennas against the source of the interfering signal. The best I can get is about 350 Mbps. However I find that h264+ at 200-300 or HEVC 10 bit at 150 Mbps are very good. 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).

The question really is if 200mbps which seems to be the max for VD in AV1 can be improved to 500 and is there even a need for it. 1 hour ago, Qcumber said: The best I can get is about 350 Mbps. Foxkitos Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 Guys did anyone noticed a loss of quality in vr since the last update?
kablamoman Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 (edited) AV1 may be more limited in terms of processing latency. I think that may be why it's limited to a lower value. Could be that the SOC in the Q3 may be taxed a bit too much if the bitrate gets much higher. I wouldn't mind being able to eke out a bit more, myself, as down low to the ground it seems the codec (at 200 Mbps) starts to struggle to retain finer details with all the grass, tree and ground textures overloading it with detail, even at 72hz. I would rather not use H264+ as it brings with it more noticeable color banding with the color gradients (especially noticeable in the sky when looking up to the darker portions). I can't say for sure as I was changing settings around and trying out QuadViews. I didn't notice blurry guages with QV prior to the patch but was obvious after the patch. I removed QV and the guages were back to normal. Other than that I haven't noticed it. What headset and how is it connected?
