I've updated the instructions to be more clear, let me know if you are having any issues now.

do you think it would be worthwhile to create a separate section of the same script that reports on the last modified dates of files that would be subject to optimization? My reasoning is that now that we have this excellent script to optimize, it would be nice to know after every DCS patch whether any of the original files were modified since the last time we optimized. That way we can save ourselves the trouble of running the entire hour-long process after every DCS patch.

Ideally it would check last modified dates of loose files as well as individual files inside zips.

I'll have to check how it behaves on a next update, but most likely you're going to have to disable the mod before an update, otherwise it's gonna download all the original textures again.

And it wouldn't be a seperate section, it would have to be very tightly incorporated and debugged.

For now i recommend keeping it as an OvGME mod on a separate drive and rerunning only if you notice any missing textures. New modules can be optimised by running the script only on their folders and merging the two mods.

UPDATE 07.09.2024

1. Changed the default file blacklist to *refl* as I noticed choppy reflections on the F-16 MFDs

I recommend to:

Disable all mods

Delete the old mod folders

Run a slow repair

Rerun the script

Thanks a lot! In my case I did experience a performance gain, I've been able to play the very same retribution CAS mission that before the texture optimization caused stutters while close to ground units and while landing back on the airbase.

That's good news, how much VRAM does your GFX card have?

👍Makes sense it helped given your VRAM

Gonna try this. Is it possible to run in subfolders so I can test individual modules/maps? And let's say I use Bartek's Caucasus mod. Could it also be optimised, unless it already is?
Cheers!

I think it's possible, I did a similar thing for mods in my Saved Ganes folder. Just point and shoot

I *think* the only textures that really benefit from resizing are the ground units, aircraft, and other assets, so not sure how much benefit you'd see from terrain textures. I may be completely wrong though.

I've seen some scenery buildings get optimized, but you are right, mostly the terrain mods are working on different types of files than what this script touches. Amazing it still finds so many GB to optimize without getting into terrain files

That's a really good question.
You can also resize the textures of the maps.
This will lead to an increase in performance

Texconv. Exe is in the same folder as the PS script?

you need to download the file texconv.exe from the github. See the original post from zbysiek at the top of this thread, there's a link.
