Assigning a slider to Zoom....

Recommended Posts

I have one of the sliders on the Throttle set as the Zoom slider, this works great, but hand position limits its use unless either in AF, or take hand of throttle.  But its very responsive and easy to center back to normal zoom position.

I am trying to use the slider on the base of the Joystick. WW Orion F16 Joystick, but that goes back to zero when you let go of it, so if I zoom with it, it goes to super wide angle when I let go.    The Range of input is zero to 65000.  Is there any way to code it to a range of say 32000 to 65000 so it goes to the normal zoom (no zoom position) when I let go?

I am going to mess with the stick on the front side of the stick as a zoom, perhaps that will be better, but the paddle is just perfect in position and feel for Zoom.

Oh well.  I have gone from "Really Crappy" at this Sim to "Pretty Crappy" working my way up to "Crappy"

@Nightdare I have the F16 grip for the Orion 2 base.  The F16 Joystick button for NWS A/R DISC & MSL STEP Button is also a HAT, so that will work for Zoom, setting it up later to test it out.

Working on house this week, painting family room (two story), hall way, and front foyer (Two Story).

I use the NWS as a zoom also, it works pretty good. I tried to use the MAN RNG 5-way switch but just because of the position it's hard to tell which way is which.

I also experimented with that one, and the MAN RNG knob is kind of a pain as it's zooming is not that smooth. I was using the slider on the throttle for zooming the TGP and that is much nicer but not proper for SIM.

I thought about doing that also, but like you said that's not how it is in game and I don't want to have to move my hand and use the slider. And I did notice using the MAN RNG it does work, you just have to keep rotating it which could be a lot to zoom in and out. Plus sometimes it skips 1 level of zoom.

It works....but not smoothly...it appears that some people have 3d printed a new knob for it that gets rid of the Hat that is on that spot and just makes it a larger knob, that sounds like a great idea for a modification (WinWing should sell that knob, hint hint WinWing....listening)

It’s nice that they added all the extra buttons, but the design of the winwing MAN RNG was a big fail. Wish they just kept it like the real one.

I'm gonna look into either buying a printed 3d button for the MAN RNG or find one somewhere myself. I don't care if I lose the 4-way hat, I would rather have something that works way better. Because trying to zoom in and out now is a pita and can be the difference of me not being able to find or fire on a target.

I was having an issue with my MAN RNG only working halfway. Talked to Winwing customer support and they told me 2 things to try. The 2nd thing they told me worked and it works great. But the actually physical button is still weird compared to the real jet. But at least it works like it's supposed to and I don't have to assign it to something else.

Cali,

I read that four times. LOL.  Did not translate well.   The printout shows F18 takeoff panel?   Were you adjusting the Throttle base controls??

Ok, I looked at that.  The edit to the config file changing one line to "true" turns on another level of debugging and just shows the axises in a table form with each current number as you turn the knobs, that is just a different representation of the graph which is there by default. There were not changes made by that edit alone that improved the function of the zoom knob.

But since you brought this up again and I was playing DCS today, I took a look and said screw it messed around with the settings again.

If you change the acceleration above 3 it is no good.  If it is set to 5 the thing just coasts to the end of each range (1 to 9 zoom) and back.

So I messed with the other setting (don't recall what it's called sorry, I'll look again and edit this), default is 10,000 or something like that, I maxed that out just for kicks and giggles. I had read that you should not set that much above 30,000 if I recall, but figured what the hell, maxed it out. In SimAppPro you can see the effect immediately as the axis will move much faster in the graph that is present in SimAppPro.  In game that made the zoom knob much more useable. Almost 1 click per zoom level, Almost. LOL but MUCH better.

I'll fly a few times and see if that is the actual solution.
