I have a quick guide (from DEKA) and and the thunder guide from (Chuck)

In the thunder guide i can read :

"2. If RWS or VS mode is selected:
a) Slew the TDC (Target Designator Controller) over a desired target and press the TDC (ENTER)
to transfer from RWS to SAM mode. This is NOT a radar lock; you have merely set a target as
the HPT (High Priority Target), which is represented as a circle. Other SPTs (Secondary Priority
Targets) will be displayed as well without a circle.
b) Press the TDC (ENTER) a second time to radar lock the desired target to STT (Single Target
Track) mode.
c) You can unlock target by using the S2 Sensor Control Switch DEPRESS"

That means :
for  RWS or VS mode selected : first DTC press-->SAM mode, second DTC press-->STT mode

Open the chinese manual, search VS, go to the VS chapter, copy it to google translate, here's the relevant part translated:

The quick guide mentions only TWS for SAM mode, it's Chuck's guide that has an error.

Chinese manual ..., ok thanks @tekwoj, i will translate the relevant part, but @Napillo seems to be refering to another manual ?, since he give me the advice to read it once,
otherwise his remark would be just .... well ....plain stupid.

Very late to the party, but I machine-translated the Chinese manual with a couple of tools. It's definitely nowhere near as close as a human translation, but I guess it is better than nothing.
I used DeepL and another tool so, when something sounds odd, the same part can be cross-referenced with the other translation.

per manual, SAM is an intermediate mode between RWS and STT. Locking under VS directly enters STT.
