I recently bought the Ryzen 7800X3D, and an MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi Gaming Motherboard. I'm looking for some RAM now, I've looked everywhere even discord, a million different recommendations. I figured I'd post in here as I mostly use DCS with the good ole Chinook. Looking for 64GB, preferably 2 x 32GB sticks.

Two choices, IMO:

  • DDR5 6000 CL30 "AMD EXPO" kits (if you just want to put the sticks and load EXPO in the BIOS, i.e, basically "plug ang play")

    or

  •  DDR5 6400 CL32 kits (if you're willing to adjust/change/test a few RAM speed and timings settings in the BIOS).

What brand or brands is the first one?

There are many other brands, but I recommend GSKILL (personal preference).

This would be good:

Or this, if you're looking for something more affordable:

How about CMP64GX5M2B6000Z30?

That is also good, but I see two problems - price is too high and the Corsair iCUE (🤮) software for the RGB setting.

I'm in Canada, those ones you posted are just shy of $500 CAD on Amazon. The Corsair is $300 CAD. I could care less about RGB stuff as I play in VR and never ever see it.

Just something to consider with 6400 memory, not all CPUs will be able to do 6400 (3200 UCLK), especially dual-rank configuration. Many can, but by no means is it guaranteed; only one of my three CPUs can do 6400 and it needs 1.3v on the SOC to do that the other two can boot and game at 6400 but will crash in Y-cruncher pretty quick (unstable). If it were me and I didn't know if my CPU can handle 6400, then I would be a 6000CL30 kit and call it a day. If you so desire, it is VERY likely that the 6000CL30 kit will do 6200 with little effort (SOC 1.2-1.25).

If you would've written that you have a 4080s then you'd have my exact system in terms of the major hardware.

I have paired my 7800x3d MAG650 Tomahawk to this G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000 (PC5 48000) Desktop Memory Model F5-6000J3040G32GX2-TZ5NR

I’ve got an EVGA RTX 3080Ti FTW3, right now….. waiting on Black Friday sales or the new release of the newest GPUs.

I looked at that RAM and in Canada it’s $416, vice the $304 for the CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD Expo Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory.

I have the same mobo and CPU and bought The vengeance RAM DDR5 64GB 6000, have bought Corsair for ages, never had a bad experience and its reasonably priced here in the UK. Non RGB will be a bit cheaper. I did notice the latest accommodates both Expo and XMP.

picked up CORSAIR Vengeance DDR5 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 AMD Expo Intel XMP iCUE Compatible Computer Memory – Gray (CMK64GX5M2B6000Z30) from Amazon last night, will be delivered tomorrow now. Also bought an MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi Gaming Motherboard (AMD AM5, ATX, DDR5, PCIe 4.0, M.2, SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI/DP, Wi-Fi 6E, AMD Ryzen 7000 Series Desktop Processors). And the 9800X3D from Canada computers.

When I looked last night for availability, none of those showed as being available anywhere in Canada. Maybe they got a fresh order in........

Now I just need my RMA'd Quest 3 to come in and I can get back to flying that Chinook.....

Next purchase is  a newer GPU, if needed......

Love Corsair, they were amazing to deal  with for RMA issues. I literally replaced every piece of hardware on my PC because the blue screen of death wouldn't go away. I still periodically get it, well, maybe/hopefully not anymore with the new MB/CPU/RAM, fingers crossed.....

That should be Hynix A-die or possibly M-die (less likely) so if you ever get the burning desire, should OC/tune nicely. Unfortunately EXPO timings are kinda bad (very conservative), but with some quick changes you can give it a lot more pep. But I would leave that for when all other stability issues (blue screen) issues have been dealt with.

Should be a pretty solid system when done.

Praying, and I don’t pray that I don’t have the blue screen of death ever again! I’m also not 1 for over clocking, I don’t want to kill the warranty.

Something to try if you get BSODs, is use Windows Even Viewer or something like NirSoft BlueScreenView to go over the logs generated at the time if the crash. It could potentially help troubleshoot the underlying issues as opposed to having to use the "parts cannon". I know BSODs can be notoriously difficult to track down unless you're knowingly doing something to the PC (overclocking), then you kinda figure out some common crashes and their cause.

Windows EV can be a bit chaotic to use, but it's built in. BlueScreenView is a bit more friendly in my past experience, but it's been a minute since I've had to use it, most of my blue screens have been from unstable overclock testing.

Hopefully you won't have the need for either approach with the new system but something to keep in your pocket if the need arises.

Been down that rabbit hole! Intel and Microsoft requested those files, all they show is it’s Nvidia and the GPU. I had the GPU RMA’d and the exact same results. We shall see when the new hardware arrives. RAM arrives today, MB tomorrow and the CPU, we’ll, as I said before, that was scheduled to arrive later in the week until Canada Computers said sorry the item is now on back order….

if the issues continues after the new hardware, then it has to be the GPU and I’ll get a new one, maybe AMD this time….

Interesting.

If it was coming from the GPU and a new GPU exhibits the same symptoms it could be a board/slot issue or possible power delivery (PSU or PSU cable); or honestly any issue including software-related that caused the GPU to crash. Anyway, hopefully your luck changes with new hardware and a fresh install of Windows.
