HitchHikingFlatlander Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 (edited) Well I've been working out of town lately in Nortern California and today I had some free time so the wife and I visited the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, Ca. Simply put this place is a pit builders dream, cool aircraft (especially helocopters) and lots of interactive displays. Now here comes the apology I took about 80+ pics but I forgot my camera so they're all on my cell phone still, basically I'm apologizing for making you wait for them. Some of the interactive displays aren't really sims but a great source of ideas and inspiration. The first display I checked out was the Flying Tigers 747 Nose section with and intact pit that you could sit in and flip switches to your hearts content. What an intimidating aircraft to fly there must be 500+ switches at least. Needless to say I made a lot of ancy kids wait there turn! The display also included the lower nose seating area as well as the upper area. Next up was an A-4 Skyhawk cockpit section (not sure if it was an actual Blue Angels A/C but those were the colors). Again lots of switch flipping and jet noises going on. Unfortunately the other pics I took of the Skyhawk pit didnt turn out.... They had a complete sim section fitted with Saitek Yokes/Throttle Quads and some nice pedals that I cant remember the manufacturers name. Unfortunately I missed out on my chance to try as we were looking at other displays when it was open. Having the Hiller namesake many of his companies creations were on display. I never realized so many of the familiar yet crazy A/C were of his design. That said they had a really cool but simple simulaton of his (insert name here drawing blank) Personal Hover Platform. It featured a life size mock-up on springs that I could only describe as moving similiar to the giant purple Grimace play structure that used to be at McDonalds in the 80s. The platform had rails all around and you stood in the middle and controlled it using body weight (Nintendos Wii Fit comes to mind). From there you had a motorcycle throttle to control thrust and its all movment and throttle after that. The display was on a timer so I only managed a few quick flights but it was challenging, innovative and most of all FUN! After that so many other cool things but I'll keep the thread On Topic with this forum. I'll post the pics as soon as I can get a chance, should provide some ideas and inspiration. Cat if you read this two words Road Trip for $10 bucks theres hours of fun and its located at San Carlos airport so plenty of A/C traffic and a fair amount of helos flying around!
