Pilotasso Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) The russians kept them for themselves. Anyone buying those same SMT's to renew the Mig-29 fleet would only buy more of the same and new maintenance problems. The airframes were just as old and perhaps similar ariframe life left as the migs everywhere. they are old soviet era airframes. Look for something entirely new. Say JF-17 for example. Kusch Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Bad news :noexpression: Give me "flying telephone pole" (SA-2)!
nscode Posted July 8, 2009 Author Posted July 8, 2009 (edited) It's early to speculate on reasons, but some witnesses say they've heard a poping sound, like in a compressor surge. There could be many reasons for it (bird strike?), but if he was in a forced turn at low altitude, when both engines are on AB, failure of the lower engine would create a huge assymetry and thrust difference pointing the nose down, and there is nothing that could be done. No airplane would save him. Stricter rules could have. I hope we will learn form our mistakes, while we did not learn from others'. mikoyan Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 jf-17 that is a fighter based on a rejected mig design, and the smt, mig-35 is a better deal than the smt
Pilotasso Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 (edited) JF-17 may be based on a rejected mig design but you dont know how much in comon both have. I bet the russians blue prints didnt include MAWS equipment like the 17 has now, nor does any current russian fighter infact. ;) Mig-35 is still in prototype phase. A production line has to be open and Serbia doesnt have the economic avaiablility to buy the plane let alone justify added the expenses of a production line for just 12 or so planes. As opposed the JF-17 is in full production, more it can have either chinese or italian equipment and western weapons. In many ways JF-17 may be superior to the current Mig versions combat efecteviness even if not as agile as a dogfighter. I would not diss the PL BVR missile series, nor the Italians AIM-7 variant. Not only that with the JF-17 you have less maintenance costs, only 1 engine and new airframe etc etc. Edited July 9, 2009 by Pilotasso .

nscode Posted July 10, 2009 Author Posted July 10, 2009 I hear that the ejection handle was not pulled. So it appears it was activated by hiting something (a shelter) on the way down. Or are there automatic ejection modes on the 29? Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
