I got DCS not installed via Steam but standalone.
Selected SteamVR and Runtime in SteamVR.
The game starts and runs in the mirror window i am used to see when running DCS with the aero.
But the meganex stays black.
Anyone any suggestions?

Not super familiar, but since DCS runs on OpenXR natively, I think you should probably select SteamVR as the OpenXR runtime. Unless this is what you meant to say already…

Attach your DCS log file. C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log (may just be a text document be named "dcs" if your Windows is hiding file extensions).

And just to confirm, moving your head also moves the image on the mirror as though you were actually in VR?

Hey Winger,

For clarification: Does your MeganeX work with other programms?  Were you able to go through the complete setup?
Then: There are known issues regarding the MeganeX and 5090 cards as well as with some SteamVR versions. Besides that the MeganeX WILL NOT WORK with other GPUs than NVIDIA!

The latest NVIDIA drivers are required.

As for SteamVR: Are you on BETA or on regular version? If so: which one are you using?
When on BETA: Switch back to regular version, restart computer then switch back to BETA again and perform restart.

For DCS: Choose SteamVR as the runtime for VR and you should be fine.

Cheers

@WingerMy Meganex arrived yesterday. Because I had the Aero before like you, you need to go to the steamVR settings and set OpenXR to SteamVR ( The button does not show anymore for me, because I already set it to)

Could you please review the Meganex ASAP?

Thanks!

the meganex has no native OpenXR support YET. They are working on it. I guess it will arrive soon.
In the meantime just use SteamVR.
For Necksaver the standard one should work.

FYI: Ill write a few words on the meganex wehn my lenses arrived. Right now i can not tell the truth about image sharpness.
It has Diopter adjustment and that helps but i also have astigmatism.
They are ordered and suppossed to be shipped today. Hope they arrive soon.

no, the meganex works with the 5090. no issues!
Use a most recent driver.
Also it works with all other VR games that work with SteamVR. OpenXR is in the works

Compatible to Aero imho

Without having done any measurements

Thanks! That's not a great FoV. I have recently been comparing my old Valve Index to my Aero for FoV. I feared my Aero had died because of gray screens, but deleting and reinstalling via device manager restored the Aero to working order😅 While the Aero' resolution is light years better than that of the Index, the FoV is, sadly, poor by comparison. That makes warbird dogfights a chore in Il-2 GB. For some reason it doesn't seem as big a handicap in DCS, but I certainly would hope for an FoV greater than that of the Aero in a newer generation, expensive HMD.

FOV comparable to the Aero. Yes. But the Aero has a rectangular shaped FOV. The Meganex has a circular FOV. Thus you lose the image in the corners.

The strap is comfortable and a good idea, maybe for racing. But for quick headturns in dogfighting it starts to slip ever so slightly that you have to readjust.

The biggest issue I currently have is:

I have a lighthouse in the right corner of my room and one far back in the left corner. When I readjust the headset with my right hand, I occasionally block the tracking . I suspect the Meganex to be so small that my head blocks the line of sight to the lighthouse in my back. So blocking the light house in front of me just cuts the Meganex totally from tracking.

Most of the time the tracking recovers, sometimes (1 out of 5 probably) it does not. So I have to reboot my PC.

Gonna put the lighthouse from my back in front of me for a test.

How is the stability of the tracking for you @Winger?

So far good. But i have 3 basestations. One in the front one back left one front right.
Also i didnt fly too much yet cause 1
1. am waiting for my VR optician lenses to be shipped (jopefully today)

2. Have a hot pixel. I am waiting on the Support to re contact be for a replacement unit.
Its one the far upper left corner of the fov. But still at that price i expect a flawless piece of hardware. No doubt i will gt a replacement unit soon.

In regards to the headstrap. It works but is not ideal. This is why i made this DAS adapter:
I also want to make a varriant that works for Quest 3 compatible headstraps. but for that i need the geometry of a Quest 3 strap hanger.

Been flying DCS with my MGNX for several days now. I followed setup instructions and some forum advice carefully and had no serious functionality issues, coming from BsBv1. 4090 gpu.  I was initially underwhelmed by the video, but after a great many iterative tweaks of IPD, diopters and headstrap adjustments I am pleased with the upgrade. High res, improved e2e clarity, no SDE, comfortable fit, vivid colors are impressive. Spotting distant aircraft in DCS is much improved. FOV not he greatest, but similar to BsB. Color banding and distortion some complain about are non-issues for me. I have the unit powered thru a smart plug and de-energize when not in use. To startup, energize the power, wait for the green LED, don the headset, start DCS. That's it. I have 2 base stations mounted at head height and placed about 6 ft from my head at 45D angles right and left. Tracking is great. Will be happy to see OpenXR implemented, hopefully soon.

I like your oem strap adapter. Is anybody making one for the BsB audio headstrap?

The Quest compatible Version is not tested yet. The other one works like a charm.
Where ddid i get the data from?
Measuring and re modeling by hand.
Whoever wants to tip me send me a PM. Much apprechiated;)

What driver sdo you ghuys use. I can not seem to get a sharp image in DCS with the meganex.  Must be a driver side issue. Everything is jagged as hell

Posted (edited)

Thanks for sharing.

I use the latest Nvida driver, and like described above, I switched to OpenVR.

What do you mean, you dont get a sharp image? I have troubles to find the sweetspot with my right eye. I was suspecting that the IPD adjustment motor was off for the right eye. Seems not to be the case. I have a minor astigmatism in my right eye. Probably need lens inserts, which I did not need for the Aero.

Whats the issue with your displayed image? What do you mean that image is jagged and not sharp? My issues are 100% optical or mechanical caused.

Also I am not able to get a better tracking. I placed both lighthouses now in a room corner in front of me. Even when I look straight ahead in front, the images greys out ever 3-5 minutes losing track and recorvers. If I need a lighthouse perfectly in front of my face, thats no solution. Gonna put it on a tripod in front of me next time, but just for testing purpose.

@Winger About the sharpness of the image. I think I know what you mean. I switched back to the Aero in full resolution. Deactivated spotting dots.

The image of the Aero looks sharper than the image of the Meganex. Although it has a higher display resolution.

But with the Aero I can see the jets from far away, before I can even spot them in the Meganex. Seem like the pixel are smoothed out or undersampled in some way.

Did you do further investigations?

Feels pretty much like a downgrade from the aero to me at the moment.
